For a competitive HYPS applicant, what would be considered some a few good match/safety schools? I'm looking for 1-2 Safeties and 2-3 Matches.

Some additional criteria/information:
- NJ resident, so will definitely apply to Rutgers as a safety
- Would prefer safeties/matches that are strong in economics/UG Business/finance
- Some IB recruiting existent

I have no idea if you have the interest or aptitude needed to go the quantitative route, but I know SUNY Stony Brook has a very well-respected applied math department with some strong connections to the finance industry.

I figure if you’re interested in Econ and Finance safeties, look for big cities with internships available. Maybe USC would be a better safety, as its probably more likely you could get in and/or get some aid (whether merit or need)? I’m a big fan of their business grad school, but I don’t know what their undergrad programs for business are.

A lot of State schools will be good for business as well, though. What are your parents Alma Maters? That’s how I got started initially on my safeties.

Well objective stats-wise I’m pretty qualified, but I was under the impression that no one should consider Northwestern a match. I know they are pretty good at IB placement, especially in Chicago.

There gets to be a point where you can either play the ‘It’s a reach for everyone’ game and only have reaches and safeties, or call something like NU a match. It’s not a safety, it shouldn’t be taken for granted, but still.

It’s a fairly popular prospective career, but at most places if you can get into a certain program you are almost guarenteed an ibanking spot (Texas has the Business Honors Program, Northwestern has the Kellogg Certificate, Indiana has the Investment Banking Workshop). Even if you don’t get into one of those programs, you will get an interview as long as you have a good GPA and experiences/extracurriculars, but it will come down to how you do in the interviews that determines if you get the offer.
