Fireworks - Yes or No?

It’s that time of year and literally, that time of night. :sparkler:

I can take them or leave them. Pretty for a moment but after a bit one looks like the next and I also really hate the loud noise. My dad used to say decades ago that fireworks were a waste of $$. I don’t necessarily disagree!

Last night was a long night with then starting around 7pm and continuing long after midnight. Two anxious dogs were pacing and bed hopping. Tonight - and the next few nights - will likely be the same.

I am not against them but I wish there would be a little more courtesy. Nothing after 11pm. No neighbors setting them off in their driveways.

To some people they are magical! And to some they are not.

Fireworks, yeah or nay?? :fireworks:

I’m OK with the city fireworks. Not OK with the neighborhood fireworks, which are illegal in my state but there is no enforcement. I’ve been hearing them for days already. It is torture for my pooch.

I don’t mind one fireworks display for the holiday. I do mind the endless fireworks that started on Friday and will continue until Wednesday. It’s just too much noise.

I happen to love fireworks BUT I hate what they do to pets, and others that are sound sensitive. And definitely hate that individuals light them where they don’t belong - noisy and outrageously dangerous (we’re still in a drought, don’t need fire to be sent into the sky, only to land who knows where).

My D is spraying her condo with cat calmer pheromones already to get her cat a bit calmer now.

I love the big fireworks we have over the bay here in San Diego. There are also several drone shows for those that don’t like fireworks. I don’t like people letting them off in neighborhoods.

Same on no endorsement :rage:

Just watched a nice display launched from a barge at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. I’m all for fireworks. I made sure my kids enjoyed them too.

Concur with everyone.

However, I remember the fireworks shows when I was a child as being a magical experience.

Also I will always remember the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony where giant footprint shaped fireworks in the air led to the lighting of the torch ceremony. It was incredible.

Nope. Our 2nd home is around 20 miles from the Res and fireworks sales. People can buy the lousy things, but they are illegal once you’re off tribal lands. Not that stops anyone. The “hill people,” as our daughter calls them, set off mortars on the hill on the other side of the highway on the 4th. The neighbors on one side of us do the same. In years past, we haven’t slept due to the explosions. And they are explosions.

Half a mile from us is the the county line where fireworks have been banned because of fire danger. People there are livid.

I’d rather celebrate with a glass of wine and a family bbq.

Because of fire dangers and all the particulates they put in the air, I hate fireworks and how they make breathing so tough, plus the burden they put on folks & animals due to loud noises. I get that they’re fun & exciting but really prefer drones and big displays put own by large entities over a brief period of time.

That said, I know that it was something my kids loved setting off when they were younger.

The best firework show I’ve ever seen was on West lake in Hangzhou China. It was a surprise as we weren’t expecting it and it was the largest most spectacular show.
I grew up with “safe” fireworks that we set off in the street. Where we live now and where I raised my kids fireworks are illegal due to extreme risk of fire. It doesn’t stop people from setting them off for days leading up to the 4th. I make sure the dog is inside before dark. The city does a display over the water that I can take or leave.

I love them but I feel soooooo sorry for the poor dogs affected so badly by them.

I know dogs get scared of fireworks but thunderstorms are worse for our nervous Nellie of a dog and far more common around here.

I don’t mind official fireworks displays but I’m unlikely to go out to see the town’s display anymore. We used to be able to see them in the distance from a nearby sidewalk but they changed where they do it now so we can’t see it any more. I’m not going and getting in a crowd to view them.

I don’t like random ones set off around here. They are mostly illegal in our state anyway. They sound like guns.

I like the large community displays over a body of water. Hate the illegal ones people shoot off in their driveways. Or in the sky over my house. When we lived in Wichita long ago, they had a Christmas fireworks show on the river that was amazing. The cold air made everything super crisp. And it could be earlier in the evening since the sun sets earlier that time of year!

Official displays - yes.
Techies with more money than brain cells hiring a semi-pro display in their backyard to celebrate birthdays - no.
People blowing up watermelons with illegal firecrackers in the middle of a cul de sac several days in a row - big nope.

We have always enjoyed our town’s fireworks display. The firefighters run the show and do an excellent job.

I don’t like people firing them off in our neighborhood. We have found spent fireworks on our front lawn, within a few feet of our house. What if they had landed on our roof? They can start a fire; this actually happened to the roof of a church my husband used to attend.

I knew a 17 year old who was badly burned from his armpits to just above his groin as a result of setting off fireworks. For the life of me, I don’t know how people can think they are safe.

Even sparklers are dangerous due to being so extremely hot. 1200ºF to 3000ºF. So many children are injured by them.

Funny you mention sparklers. I grew up with them and loving them and the little sound they would make. So I got some for my kids when they were younger. They didn’t seem into them.

Well of course not! “Here honey, hold this hot stick of fire in your hand and twirl it around!” - lol, now I see what a dumb idea it probably was and seems to them!

I never go to fireworks displays because I can’t stand crowds. If I happen to be in a place where I can see them from afar, like over the treetops in our yard or from a hotel window, I’ll stop for a few minutes and watch but, like others, I can take them or leave them and I hate the noise.

I did like sparklers as a kid and did get them for our son when he was little. I also got a box for him and his GF when they visited us at the cabin over the 4th a couple of years ago. Probably a bad idea in the woods, but they enjoyed them and did not ignite the neighborhood.

Chemicals and debris in the water aren’t worth it for me. Our place in Maine has an annual argument over fireworks over the lake, and the fireworks always win. Despite a burn ban. Despite having to sit out with a bucket of water to catch and stomp out embers landing. (The lake spans two districts, one allows fireworks, one does not)

We live where one of the biggest displays in the state takes place, and honestly 40 minutes of fireworks is about 30 too many for me. I don’t mind the noise, I don’t mind the traffic, I just think at some point it is boring.

I admit to enjoying community displays. A lot. I don’t like fireworks set off in the neighborhood, especially now that the rules on what can be set off have been relaxed.
