DD was accepted to Westover, however, without financial aid. I told her before she was a great candidate, it was just our financial situation that was going to cause problems.
There should be no doubt in your daughter’s mind that she is worthy! My fingers are crossed that other schools have the funding to be more generous.
@makp715 – Do you have a hard number that it has to reach? Does your DD know that #? I hope you get the aid that you need
smaller schools with small endowments can make it very difficult for applicants needing financial aid
We need significant financial aid. DD is fully aware that finances are going to be the issue. Still 9 more schools to hear from, the battle isn’t lost yet.
Congratulations are still in order, @makp715!! Not being US citizens probably made it harder.
We are in a similar position, (50% FA need). My DD applied widely as well. She received an email from Canterbury that she was accepted Monday night. Unfortunately, the note indicated that her official package would not come until M10. So we have our fingers crossed for aid… it would be so great to know what we are dealing with. Having an acceptance on the table minimizes some of the stress, but not knowing the FA numbers is still making us antsy. She too went into this process understanding the financial hurdles that need to be addressed and wanted to give it a shot anyway. Let’s just hope the good 'ol sorting hat knows exactly where they belong and we have great news to share on Friday.
I’m sorry, @makp715. It is hard to read those letters… and I know that it is hard for the school to have to send them.
One of Westover’s AOs has told me that the hardest part of her job is having to tell wonderful, deserving kids each year that there simply isn’t enough FA to enroll them.
Most schools, if they are unable to fund a qualified applicant to the level that is needed, will simply not admit them (or waitlist them. And some schools have FA waitlists.) Westover prefers to go ahead and admit those applicants, because they want the kid to hear the message clearly: ‘You were a solid candidate. You are indeed worthy of admission. We would love to be able to welcome you to next year’s freshman class. Unfortunately, we do not have enough financial aid to go around.’
When my D was applying to schools 4 years ago, she was waitlisted at a couple, and while I suspected it was because of FA, we didn’t really know. I personally prefer the clarity of “We’d love to have you, but we can’t give you as much as you need.”
Fingers crossed that better news is on the way for your family. Hang in there!
Congrats, @makp715 kid and @Ginamarie119 kid!
I too like that they make it clear that the kid was a good candidate.
I also suspect that there are always a couple of FA applicants every year that DO find $ – a grandparent, etc.,-- and this keeps the school from missing a kid they wanted.
Congrats to both of you! We got 2 similar acceptances…I don’t want to say formally until M10. At least we know he’s academically qualified. We need FA too.
Congrats to you as well @sunnyschool
Congrats to everyone who received good news!! Thank you for sharing your family journey with us this year on CC! Time to hug your kids!!
Honestly, neither are things we can act on and verrrry nervous about Friday!
Yea, @sunnyschool !
Congrats @makp715 @Ginamarie119 @sunnyschool for the acceptance.
I also like it that they accept without FA than waitlist without knowing why. All the best on M10.
