Daughter did not get first choice major--should she still consider school, and try and get into her choice of major in her 2nd year?

I think that depends on what the major is, and what her other options are. Can you give more specifics?

Well–she got accepted to UT @ Austin under undeclared but she really wanted to get into the Communications school for RTF(Radio/Television/Film); and Florida State University program for Motion Picture Film.

Both schools have a terrific reputation for what she ultimately wants to study–film. Should she go to FSU–hang out for one year, and hope to get into the film program her sophmore year, or should she go to UT undeclared, and try and get into the Communications school her sophmore year?

Any advice would be so greatly appreciated! She is picking an extremely tough field to get into–think she has a lot of uphill climbing to do!!

BTW–got accepted to FSU Honors Program

I think if one is passionate about a particular major (and many aren’t) then they should go to a school where they can pursue that major. That means that the school needs to firstly offer the major and secondly, she needs to be able to get into it. If she goes to a school ‘hoping’ to get in but finds that after spending a year there she doesn’t get into that major, now what? It can be a tough spot. From your description it sounds as if she’s not into the major right away at both schools so it’s somewhat up in the air at both - is that correct? If so, then has she considered other schools where she’s assured of getting into the major? Alternatively, does she know the odds of actually making it into the major at each of these schools?

It also comes down to just how passionate she is about the major. Some students are ‘kind of interested’ in a major and others won’t consider any other major. Depending on where the student lies between these points has an impact on the risk they’re willing to accept of whether they get into the major or not.

thank you for your input! she has had a passion for film since she was 8yrs. old, and it never went away. she has done many short films/videos; and many believe that she has pure talent. I truly believe that when these certain schools meet her, and see her work ethic, they will be impressed. Her drive is incredible, and we really see her accomplishing her goals–eventually. She choose these two schools because they are rated very high for film–maybe in retrospect, she should have applied to less than popular schools, and then maybe transferred out. But now, she has to decide!!! I really like the “feel” of FSU; but also love the high academic feel of UT at Austin. I guess price tag will also come into play–since we are from WNY. Yes–she is the one that is having a really hard time putting down–“undeclared” when she knows full well that she wants to be in the film program. Guess this next year will be a lesson in life for her.
