If I already put a school as a first choice when I sent in my semifinalist stuff, can I change that, and at what point would it be smart to do so?

Yes, you can change it up to a certain time--I think some time in April. It would be wise to do so if your first choice school does not accept you, or if it does not give NM aid, or if you change your mind on which school is your first choice. (so long as your new first choice gives NM grants)

the material you received in the packet with your award letter tells you what to do.there's also a postcard in there which you send out in order to meet their deadline for naming your REAL first choice come April 15th or so.Make sure its postmarked on time. You don't have to do anything at the moment but pay attention to the deadlines.

Please be aware that I think you can only change your choice once. You can't change every month. Also, unless the school to which you are applying requires being named by a certain date, you can wait until mid April when you know where you have been accepted to either name your first choice or to change it. They will also take a fax if you don't want to trust the USPS with a post card.

My reading of the materials son was sent is that you have to change BEFORE the school you named designates you as their NMF, otherwise you can't receive any other NMF scholarship. You should double-check with your schools GC & NM if you have questions. For my son, since he's undecided, he didn't designate any school, since you have until some date in April or May to choose the school you wish to designate as 1st choice.

himom, susantm, and cathymee are right. be sure to make the change in writing. think shennie is correct about faxing change.....it's o.k.......just be sure to make change in writing. it's my understanding that you can make multiple changes as long as they are in writing.

I believe you can change it up to May 31, at least that was true 6 years ago. D didn't pick her college till April 30, and it wasn't one she had designated. We called the s chool, who told us to change it with the Corporation, then have them notify them. She did, and got the school scholarship.

You can change until mid-summer after senior year. We did it in July, even though the cut off said June. Many waitlists don't close until mid summer. Some schools may have a cut off, but if you get an NMS award, you can will move it right up until they write the check in September.

I don't believe this is true. Where did you find it?

Well, you only have one postcard to change it, but you can call/fax in I believe...and I'm almost positive that I read you can change your choice an unlimited amount of times.
