First Day Back

extremely tired today...having FOUR classes in one day is not recommended. I ended up dropping a class and adding another one for tomorrow, since the class I dropped was a 3 hour class which is held AFTER my three consecutive classes. Maybe my MWF class schedule won't work out so well after all..:/

I have 4 tomorrow. I am very much not looking forward to it. But it was necessary and I have long breaks so oh well. I have t/r.

maybe eventually, yo. how many years you want till rich?

I'd like to be well on my way by 26ish. Should have MBA for a few years at that point. And am not talking wealthy wealthy, but comfortable and flexible for a single person in LA or Orange County.

Sooner if the stock market is good to me.

Honestly am not trying to sound shallow or presumptious or anything, but it gives you something to work towards and honestly I can't NOT do well. I like my lifestyle too much to not make money and I'm not down with relying on other people. So I must rely on myself. And I shall. And I shall succeed, damn it.

hear hear on lifestyles to support

that's one reason why i'm not having kids...

Kids are the #1 consumption good. Basically, for the first 30 years, its an empty investment with no capital return.

you make 100k a year as single and your rich. you make 100k with a family and you're poor.

namaste: 100K with a family and you are poor? where do you live?

in the insulated bubble of west LA county... since i've never expeirneced life out of here, i wouldnt know that 100k is pretty decent for most american families. here, you're in trouble.

Citan- I don't know about poor, but I don't know that it would be particularly easy, either.

My mom makes significantly more than that as a sole income earner but supporting 3 college-or-almost-college-age kids and her mom means that she still relies on the next month's paycheck to get by w/ bills, etc. Granted there are lots of stocks and lots in savings and in the 401k, but in order to keep all that she needs to keep working. We're comfortable, but again, we're talking about a lot more than 100k in south orange county. I think we'd probably have to cut back A LOT if she was making 100. I certainly wouldn't have school paid for, no cars, etc. It definitely wouldn't be poverty, but the lifestyle would change quite a lot.

*this is coming from someone whose mother was previously almost on welfare before getting back on her feet and who has seen the shift first hand.

yeah but im sure you guys all have some extra padding to spend you know?

Of course. If my mom lost her job tomorrow we'd be fine. But im saying that making more than 100k doesnt make people rich, especially in west la or south orange county. Especially when a 3 bedroom home with no lawn is going for 1.3 million. It makes you comfortable, but I would hardly classify it as serious wealth.

Now, my boss who makes ~180k base as a single dude? Sure. Other boss who makes ~500k base not including his famous-ish wife's salary (and no kids)? Definitely. But that's a serious jump from 100k with kids.

i do know what you mean, especially after taxes. still, are you even worried about a budget? lot of going out to eat, buying designer clothing, nice vacations, etc.?

Go out to eat often but less because we're all trying to pay more attention to what we eat. Designer clothing is definitely a luxury and if bought at all, it's usually at loehmans at a serious discount. We get expensive purses as gifts for maybe christmas, or my mom will buy herself something from saks as a treat, but it's most definitely not an everyday thing. My mom travels through work and gets lots and lots of points so vacations are generally pretty low cost.

We're in the midst of a serious house remodel (because once my mom get marries we're going to sell) and my moms throwing herself a (very nice) wedding and she's putting my brother and i through school. and she supports my grandma. etc. So while there are definitely luxuries, there are also more expenses. You know, the more you earn the more you tend to spend.

My mom is often stressed about money and definitely keeps to a budget.

I'm not saying I'm not fortunate- I definitely am and I appreciate every single thing I have. Like I said, it hasn't always been like this and the relatively recent good fortune has only made me want to work harder to gain it for myself. I stress about money lots and it's definitely not like I get everything I want. I have (admittedly fairly low) credit card debt to show for my recent stint of unemployment, which I definitely wouldn't have if my mom gave me everything I needed/wanted.

^

Where in S. Orange County do you reside in?

bfired2, what classes are you taking now?
I'm thinking about dropping my Byzantine Empire class.
I have no idea what the professor is talking about, and I even did the reading!

well, at last count (i've added and dropped about TEN times, no joke)
poli sci 142 (political parties) which is actually pretty interesting, cool prof
geography 184 (california) which starts tmw
geography 133 (cultural) which is also interesting, cool prof
and advanced vietnamese...which i have NO idea how i placed into that. how 'bout you?

did anyone ditch class yet.

i did.

i ditched a two lectures, because i cant understand the prof, and one disucssion, but they were doing a review that i alreayd knew.

am i a bad bad person?

am i a bad bad person?

i technically ditched classes yesterday...because of yom kippur, so whatever...my profs are letting me make it up...

Nikkei- Mission Viejo

And the ditching thing is either totally cool or really really bad depending on the class. Last year i didnt go to half of the lectures in one class because it was pointless. He posted all of the lecture notes online and tests were taken directly from the notes. Other classes definitely aren't as conducive to ditching though.
