First generation and college admission

<p>What is the significance of being first generation (for UC's and other top50 schools)? I've heard it's beneficial but after checking UC stats, it seems that first generation applicants have lower acceptance rates than normal applicants in all categories (GPA, SAT, course rigor, etc.).</p>

<p>I'm confused.</p>

<p>Everyone and his mother is first generation. It doesn’t mean much, unless coupled with a tear-jerking success story about rising up from the streets and the thug life.</p>
