Does being a first generation college student actually help you out when the admissions team is deciding on whether to admit you or not? My parents never finished high school when they were in China and I put down that they never finished high school in all my apps.
It helps some. Mostly, it gives them context for evaluating your application. To oversimplify a little, colleges will expect more of someone whose parents were more educated.
