Hi guys. This question of mine doesn’t actually really relate to Yale exclusively, only except I would like to go to Yale more so
Anyway so I have a question if whether i’m a first generation kid.
My parents are immigrants and my mom never went to college. My dad on the other hand did. he’s the MOST hardworking person in the whole world and incredible resilient-- he immigrated to the US from Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge, and he was able to graduate from Georgia Tech.
So would I count as a first-generation?
No.
That being said, different schools have different definitions of first generation. At most schools, having a custodial parent who graduated from a four year institution would preclude first generation status. At Yale, a first generation applicant is “an applicant who is the first in his or her family to attend a four-year college or university.” So, having a parent who merely attended a four year institution, whether or not they actually graduated would preclude first generation status. https://admissions.yale.edu/advice-first-generation-college-applicants
okay thanks a lot for the info as disappointed as I am-- oh well, you know?
@cat105, no not first generation, but the grit your father exhibited usually doesn’t die out in one generation, and it’s an attribute that will serve you well in life, whether or not you attend Yale.
Disclosure: my family (and I) were immigrants, albeit not from Cambodia. Good luck!
