Hello! I'm sort of new to this website but i still lurk around ;) i didn't know where this thread would fit/if it is appropiate for this area so mods, feel free to move it. I am a freshmen (i know, i know! dont kill me D:) and I'm wondering what exactly "first generation" is. I know some universities consider this and im wondering what classifies a person as being first generation, because I live in a single parent family, with me mother. She didn't finish high school and dropped out due to pregnancy. Well anyways, my sister (graduated high school, 19) is attending a local community college and will transfer to a state university within a couple of years or so. I was wondering if im still considered first generation or not. Please and thanks! :) (sorry for the long post!)

As long as your dad didn't attend college and/or doesn't support you in any way, you are first generation. Your sister has nothing to do with it.

you are and it will also help u have a higher chance of getting into colleges. i am a first generation too.

Whether your dad supports you or not, if he attended college, you are not the first generation in your family to attend college.

I have absolutely no idea if my father attended college (he left before i turned 1). though im pretty sure he probably didnt graduate/or graduated from high school.
thanks for the replies guys! :)
