i'm starting college in two weeks, and i'm a little nervous. i'm going knowing absolutely no one, and there aren't any programs before school starts in smaller groups or anything. it's just orientation, and then class. i'll probably think this is really dumb to ask looking back, but what do you do the first night out? i don't want to sit alone in my suite or anything, but i'll know absolutely no one....people always say to never go to a party alone, so then, what do i do? do i just glom on to a big group of freshman? sorry this sounds so stupid, but i really have no idea and i don't want to miss out on the fun just because i don't have a built-in group of friends.

Most people don’t know anyone, and will probably be eager to welcome people/be friendly.
You can latch onto a group of people from orientation, or from your dorm. You probably won’t be great friends with all of them, but everyone’s in the same boat.
You’ll make lasting friends, but it doesn’t have to happen in the first 24 hours.

find other people in your situation (everyone is in your situation)
talk to them? figure it out from there.

Leave your dorm room door open and talk to people as they walk by.

Make your room inviting. Play video games, music, have food. You’ll get enough people to wander in (or by).
