First post!! Chance me please?

Hey, i've been reading college confidential for a few month, and decided to start posting here. =P
anyway, there are my stats:

Junior
Asian Male
Top 50 public school
sends numerous top grats to top schools

gpa: 3.833

rank: don't know yet, aprox top 15%-20%. not 10%

here is the dilemma. in my freshmen year, i had a 3.3 gpa, with 5.5 Bs and 1.5 As. Sophmore year i had 1 B, and Junior year i have straight As. I have no idea what happened freshmen year. Major fail.

SAT: 2070/1420 <= will retake next year, aiming for 2150 or so.

SATII:
Chem- 760
will take math 2 and physics, maybe bio or literature.

APs:
Calc AB- probably a 5
Stat- probably a 5
Comp Sci- 3 or 4 (complete blanked out during this test)
Chem- 4 or 5

Senior Schedule:
AP Physics C
AP Bio
AP Calc BC
World Literature
AP Latin Language
Gym/Lab Assistant
AP Gov

~~Every class that is not an AP is honors, and every class is a full year course.~~

~~Took 2 classes at a state college over the summer that counts for college credit~~

ECs:
150 hours of community service
JV letters for 2 sports (one year)
Varsity letters for 2 sports (two years)
Orchestra/All State Orchestra (Three Years)
MOE regional 1st place
Math Modeling (3 years)
~~These are the only clubs I won awards of am an officer in.~~

(the fun part) COLLEGES
JHU
Rice
Emory
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UVA
UMich
USC
University of Washington (alumni relations)

also, if all my colleges are reaches, please name some that seem appropriate for me.
Also, could some people clue me in on which colleges do not look at freshmen grades, because mine were simply awful. Without my freshmen grades included, i'd have a 4.17 gpa.

Thanks ALOT!!

your upward trend from your freshman year is going to help you ALOT.

i think you have a strong chance at all the schools listed! (except JHU and berkely, very selective)

What do you plan on Majoring In???? Umich and the majority of Public schools don't look at freshman or senior year. They also round all A-'s to A's and B+'s to B's. So they recalculate the whole thing.

hey, thanks alot for taking the time to reply! i'm planning to major in whatever you need for med school or math or statistics, as they are my strong subjects.

anyone else have any thoughts?

typical asian and the dream of being a doctor?
lol. dont worry, i also have that dream
remember that college and medical school are two different things.
i know people who majored in Civil Engineering and Music Theory just for fun and went to med school to become a doctor.

JHU (far reach)
Rice (reach)
Emory (reach)
UC Berkeley (far reach)
UCLA (reach)
UVA
UMich (im assuming ann arbor, match)
USC
University of Washington

thanks! so by 'reach' that means i have 50/50 chance of getting in?
also, i'm assuming you're thinking uva, umich, usc, and uw are all matches for me?

any other opnions out there?

bummmppppp

A reach does NOT mean you have a 50:50 chance of getting in. It means that you have a relatively small chance of getting in.

You can major in anything you like to apply to med school, you just need to take certain classes.

It's interesting that people are willing to give you chances on several selective state universities without even knowing where you are a resident.

There's a lot to learn here on CC, but the Chances forum is not the place to do it. Go to the Premed topics forum to find out what being premed really is and what is necessary for applying to med school. Learn about the differences in applying as an in-state vs. out-of-state student (both for admissions and financial aid). And on and on, and forget about the Chances threads which are basically junk. Good luck.

idk really know for all the schools, but i think for UC berk & UCLA, you have a pretty good chance. personally, i think anhtimmy is being a bit too harsh. i know people with way less qualifications than you who have made it to UCb/LA. same w/ USC.

as entomom said, location counts. if you're from CA, then berk & LA are def. a match (i think).

thanks. fyi, i'm out of state of all of the schools, so i guess my chances drop dramatically lol.
