Probably my first "chance me"...

First of all, I guess I should show my stuff...:

So I'm a rising senior, Asian, male. I live in California. My school's... well, it's competitive. And it's public. My old school was private, but competition... nah... Anyway, the school I currently am attending does not rank.

Orchestra

ECs, Volunteering, etc...
- A youth orchestra in the community (2004 - 2007, when we moved)
- Taekwondo (2004 - present)
- A leadership program for Taekwondo, where I teach/assist (currently, mostly assisting) others (kind of recent)
- Currently in a summer symphony at UC Berkeley
- Planning on volunteering at a children's hospital (yeah, I know, freakin' late, and the interview in July rather than in June doesn't help as well)

I've participated in school clubs, but I doubt they'd be of any significance. But if you must...: Math Club (junior year), Quiz Team (sophomore year), Quiz Bowl (junior year; same type of club, only changes in setting, people, and name :P), and this Red Cross affiliated club that I probably won't even talk about in my applications.

And let's see... I have a predilection towards science over humanities (looking at my courses/APs/SAT IIs, that's kind of a duh...). Kind of interested in biology, chemistry... that sort of stuff. Kind of considering becoming a Biology major, although that is subject to change in the next few months.

Okay, so here's a rather specific question: What's UC Berkeley to me? A reach? Match? Safety?

Is Stanford at least a reach?

And what other colleges would you recommend, based on this information?

Thanks...

Phew... my first one... -_-

UC Berkeley looks like a safety, since you live in California.
Your GPA and SAT scores are solid, and I don't see why Berkeley would not accept you.

Yeah I totally agree. Although Berkeley and UCLA can never be considered safeties so rather I would put it as a match for you. You have great ECs, straight A's with AP courses, solid SAT's. I would definitely apply to Ivy's because you have a good chance!

Okay, so hopefully going on with this thread...

Teacher recommendations: My English teacher (junior year) and my calc teacher are going to write my recommendations. I've made good relationships with these two teachers. Was a top student in their classes. I believe I've made myself stand out by being his first student to take on AP English in the senior year (considering that normally, AP students take Honors English at my school).

So here's the list of colleges I'm considering applying to. Subject to change, but still...:
- Stanford
- Johns Hopkins
- UC Berkeley
- UPenn
- Cornell

So, hit me!

go higher than u penn, seriously.

ucla should be your safety
uc berkeley- almost reach
johns hopkins, cornell, upenn -possible reaches
stanford, and add either hyp- high reach

you have a good shot, just about as much as anyone else at hyps, consider them. maybe strenghthen your service/extra curricular work. but your scores seem pretty solid.
