Hi, I’m a high school senior and am taking a Multivar/Differential Equations class this year. Math isn’t really my strongest suit, so I knew I would really have to buckle down if I wanted to get a good grade.
For the first test, I went through the textbook and did every odd-numbered problem for the units we covered hoping to do well, but I got my grade back and it was a C.
I feel pretty discouraged, I know it’s a hard class, but I don’t know what I can do to improve at math when I feel like I learned the fundamentals wrong.
Anyway, I’ve started to accept that I might get a B this quarter, and as colleges look at your first quarter grades, I wanted to know how this would affect my chances of getting into the more competitive colleges like CMU, Princeton, MIT, etc.
Thanks for the responses!
First off, if you’re in that class, you’re way ahead of the curve - so I can’t imagine that math isn’t your strong suit - or one of them.
Heaven forbid a kid isn’t perfect and gets a B - and in a class that few take.
No - it won’t. The likelihood of you getting in is small - especially at Princeton and MIT - but this won’t be the reason why you (or anyone else) doesn’t.
Keep working hard. If you’re well rounded overall and have a great list of reaches, targets, and safeties, you’ll be fine.
Waaaaaay too much pressure on yourself.
Good luck.
