I took the March SAT for the first time and I just wanted to know how I should interpret my scores. My goal was to hit 2000 since it was only my first time, but I managed a 1990 =D

Critical Reading: 600
Math: 740
Writing: 650
Multiple Choice: 67
Essay: 8

I hate the reading section so much! Haha I need to bump up my vocab. I was confused about the writing section and the essay; is the essay a good score? My math was obviously high, but can someone give me their opinion about my overall score?

My college aspirations are University of Chicago and Stanford (reach); Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Columbia (match/reach); and A&M (fallback). By junior year I hope to bring up my score to at least a 2100, hopefully hitting 700 in each subject.

Any response would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)

You are in good shape, but you need to read, read, read…much better at your point in high school than trying to memorize lists of SAT words. Don’t know what your summer is all about, but that would be a great plan for the summer. Pick any of the many “great book” lists. We had a book (sorry, gave it away so I can’t look up the title), that had a brief summary of the top 100 books. The “rule” was that my kids had to read the book first, but then they read the summaries, as they went into all the “what was the author thinking…” Sorry, but “Twilight” or romance novels don’t count…they need to be meaty meaningful books. And look up the words you don’t know.

As for the writing, I am not aware that any schools are using the Writing Score in admissions decisions yet. Your math is fine, and will improve as you continue taking math classes in high school.

Good luck!

You’re starting with a pretty high baseline but, with a fair amount of practice, you can easily reach past 2200s (btw you would need to do much better than 2100 for a shot at some of those schools). I started at around 1860 in freshman. By sophomore i was hitting 2100s and by junior, 2200s/2300s and ended up with a good score. I remember when I was a freshman, I never thought I would be able to think about getting in the 2200s let alone 2300s, but now it’s not so bad. You may be underestimating your future capabilities like I did. Essay being an 8 is not good. 9 is meh. 10 is decent. 11 is excellent and 12 is outstanding. You’re in line for getting good enough scores to get into the schools you want.

Thanks for the responses guys.

For astrophysicsmom (that’s really cool because that’s what I wanted to be when I was a little younger!) I didn’t actually realize that college’s don’t look at the writing portion for admissions. But about your idea for the books, I’ve already started! I’m going off of BBC’s Top 100 Books here: [BBC - The Big Read - Top 100 Books](BBC - The Big Read - Top 100 Books) As for the summer, I’ll be hitting up the gym for the beginning half, but I have a busy second half! Volunteering at a camp at church as a guide, attending ROTC training camps, and taking a summer course!

Dblazer, thanks! I think I’m going to take an SAT course next year and hopefully I’ll get at least a 2100. The prompt this year was really stupid so I really want to see what I can get next time.

Thanks to both of y’all :)
