What is a good schedule to take first semester? I was thinking about not taking a lot of really hard courses, as like a transition into college, but I'm not sure what to take. I'm thinking about being a math/econ double major.

So far I'm thinking of...
-writing 125
-econ 101
-math 225
-something else??, maybe philosophy or psych??

if anyone has any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate it.
thanks.

Your schedule sounds fine, but since you did ask for advice....

Math 225, so I've heard, is quite difficult. However, I've never taken Combinatorics, so I can't tell you anything. You may or may not think so depending on your preparation. However, the course is proofs based, which is stinks for taking it, but will leave you much better prepared for Linear Algebra (Math 206) than I was, since I didn't know the first thing about proofs and the Prof assumed more than she should have. I had Mira (Bernstein) for Math 205 (Multivariable) two years ago, I liked her a lot. Do keep in mind that all math 300 levels require 206, which requires 205.

Econ. My roommates took this with some guy who was really good, but a visiting prof, now teaching at Harvard. You have a leg up with a career in econ as a math major, but I'm sure you heard that 358528 times already. You should have a fairly easy time scheduling the class, since Econ is a huge department at Wellesley, so there will be many sections offered. Take advantage and schedule around some other fun activity or PE, or find tha best prof (I can't help you there) via Opinions classes.

Writing 125. Have a backup class. Or be willing to to take anything to get it out of the way if you have bad luck with registration. Like Beowulf. That one never fills up. I had to take my writing 125 Spring semester because the one I really wanted was full- and I didn't quite know what to do with myself. This involved a very teary WendyMouse wandering into Linguistics class at that same slot, but at least getting in her fourth class.

Unless they've change it, Wellesley only lets the first years register for three classes. They must use add/drop put in their fourth class. It's their way of reminding you to "shop" for classes.

thanks wendymouse. ive actually already taken multivariable calculus and linear algebra, so im hoping my credits transfer. thanks for your help.

would you know of any writing 125 courses that always fill up or maybe other ones besides beowulf that arent that popular?

Nobody likes the Beowulf class? Gahh, you all make me cry, I thought the Beowulf class looked amazing! Also, have actually memorized my student ID, I am full of pride this day : )

I do know someone who took Beowulf- she did like it. The class just doesn't attract a lot of students, so it had 11/15 people. Which means you can count on getting in.
A lot of the writing classes were overdrawn by 1 to 2 people.
Last fall the following courses had spaces (as in 1 to 3 spaces):
Your Money and Your Life
The Role of Stories (section 2)
Coming of Age Autobiography/ies
The Idea of Home
Crime and Punishment in America
The Story and the Writer

JenniferP- I'll bet your Multivariable will transfer. Whether that means you will get Wellesley credit or just an exemption from the major, I couldn't tell you. Professor Bu is chair, and you'll get an opportunity to talk to him at a department fair before registration. You may not have as much luck with getting out of Linear Algebra. If it wasn't proofs intensive it won't fly. In fact, Wellesley won't take MIT's typical linear algebra course for the major because it ISN'T proofs based. If you do have to take it, try to take it first semester. You may get kicked out because you are a first year, but the fall Prof is really good.

my friend told me that first year grades don't count, so one should actually take hard classes. she wishes she had.
i don't know if that's genius or insane, but i'm just putting it out there...

First year grades count. They show up on your transcript and become part of your GPA, which gets sent to anyone you pay to Wellesley to send it to. The standards of the people who read your transcript vary.

If you have above a certain average your first year, you get "first year distinction".

First year grades are only not used to determine whether you get Latin Honors, Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Suma Cum Laude.

I think I'd personally rather ease myself in the first year and not take too many classes that will kill me. :) It's going to be enough of a transition. I'd like to get a feel for what professors expect and how I can handle the courseload before I really start taking difficult classes.

There's "ratemyprofessor.com", which gets very little traffic. This past year, a professor looked up his own ratings at that site, wasn't pleased, and then ranted about it on Community. Within Wellesley's Firstclass, there is a private "Opinions-Classes" forum, private for Wellesley students. It gets a moderate amount of traffic, but not enough. A profesor once asked me if there was a lot of dirt on that forum. I had to tell her (in my opinion) that there wasn't nearly enough.
