My daughter filled out the common application on-line. How does the counselor send in the first semester grades. Will she get an email notice automatically from the common application requesting them? I know my daughter will go ask her to send it in for her when she gets back to school from winter break but the counselor is so flakey and new to the school that she probably doesn't know what to do.

She should remind her guidance counselor that the schools she applied to require something called a “midyear report”, which can be submitted either online or on paper. Your daughter will not get an automatic email notice from the common application reminding her of the midyear reports; instead, she needs to find out herself (for instance by going through the admission websites of each school), which ones request the form and provide her counselor with the names of these schools.

The midyear report can be found here on the common app website. It’s up to the guidance counselor how she wants to send it in:

Good luck to your daughter!
