first semester grades

Do first semester grades in college really matter for grad school?

Yes. Because it will be part of your overall GPA.

Unless of course you're lucky enough to go to a school with a pass/ no record first semester.

No, they don't really matter. No one cares about your college freshman grades unless your trying to transfer out to another college institution during your undergraduate status. As long as you don't completely screw up (i.e. fail) and you make sure to pull up your grades quite high during the course of the next four years, you'll be fine.

thanks becky - you are thinking in my terms.

all hail pass /no record.

/me misses pass/ no record (but not icb).

Unfortunately freshman year first semester is the best time to get up your GPA b/c that buffer that was there keeping your curve high will gradually disappear and your class will gradually get smart and you will have to work harder to get better grades. I was part of the buffer first semester. Then I got my ADHD medicine and now I'm doing fine but it hurt me doing bad (I could have done much worse, I was slightly above a 3.0, don't know how I pulled that off to tell the truth.) And once you're behind (if you're failing get those grades up, you don't want to retake a course) it is hard to catch-up. So not trying to discourage you but I'm just giving you a reality check it will be hard. If your problems are fixable (didn't study, never did the work, always sick, ADD) fix it and catch up. If not, and you tried your hardest then maybe engineering isn't for you. Not being mean, but they're weed-out classes for a reason and they're not just for freshmen year, they go on at least into sophomore year. Do what you can to end it and think about those questions I just asked you later. Think realy hard about if it's for you or not you don't want to suffer for a year and then quit or even longer (a lot of my friends right now aren't sure). So gluck.

I still say the way to scare the freshmen on halloween would have been on to say that pass/no record was a lie.

We would have been in tears to say the least.
