First semester senior grades

At my school, and possibly at others, some senior year teachers have not been afraid to dish out tough grading at the end of first semester. Not that this is bad, but (especially due to a single class), my GPA is noticeably lower than in other years. How bad is this? I understand that failing a number of classes would be unappealing for colleges, but a single bad grade: will this have a huge effect on college decisions?

For perspective, I usually have around a 3.9 GPA, but this semester because of a B- in my economics class (a subject I have no intention of majoring in), my semester GPA is around a 3.73. All other classes are As or A-s. I have applied to some of the more competitive schools, so I hope this won't completely destroy any chances I might have...

Thanks!

if it’s just a B- I’m sure it won’t be a problem. If you had like 5 A’s and a C though, it will definitely raise eyebrows. As long as you’re not failing or getting a D you should be alright.

You’re fine… Stop worrying…

Even a C wouldn’t be terrible. Applications are viewed holistically. One B, or two Bs, or one C, will not lead an AdCom to throw your entire application in the trash.

Wow that sounds good because I got a C+ on my midterm (separate grade on my report card)…

But the problem is, I’m applying to Ivy League colleges, and on top of that C+ I have a few B’s thrown in there as well. Everything else is in the A range. And that C+ was in a class where 18 out of 21 people received a C or a D. Am I supposed to explain this to the interviewers or what? Should I really worry about this if my weighted GPA is a 4.4/5 and I have a 2290 SAT and decent extracurriculars?

^ Don’t hijack other people’s threads. Post your own.

That’s reassuring guys. I’ll still try to bump it to a B, but, as most people have been telling me, there’s a lot worse that could happen…
