First Thanksgiving break Flight home

…she is on season one of the X files. Epic binge to end 2015 has begun

When are your children coming home for spring break? Mine will arrive Saturday evening. :x

Next year he wants to stay at school and collect maple syrup to get out of school year work job duty. =((

I heard that my neighbor’s son is flying home with four other Eagle Scouts from West Point to go skiing. Understandably the other boys’ families are not happy. Hope @ChoatieMom son is not one of them.

Are you stocking up fridge?
Ready for more frequent laundry?
Saving funds for food bill, water and electricity bill (gaming is a power hogger)?

I’m ready for more laughters and hugs (while it’s still tolerated.) :x

DD is not coming home :frowning:
She is going on a school-sponsored trip to visit colleges in the Northeast and then on to a classmate’s home to spend the remainder of the break.
So happy that she has developed close friendships so quickly, but sad I won’t see her again until Family Weekend.
Maybe I can squeeze in another SoCal weekend before then…

Sorry to hear that. Next year I’ll feel that.

Well summer break is not too far either.

Picking up DS on Friday. We have a few college visits scheduled during break. And doctor & dentist appointments, a math competition, a constructed language competition and his final driving lesson.

ChoatieCadet is not coming home due to crew. We will see him in a couple of weeks at Plebe Parents Weekend. Then we won’t see him again until the end of the summer after air assault school.

gusdad and guscousin (and possibly gusgranny) are leaving late Thursday night, driving 600 miles straight, extracting guskid from his school, turning around, and driving 600 miles straight back to arrive home late Friday night. Since gusdad and I are in the process of moving across town (here, across town is like 4 blocks), my job between now and then is to finish laying the floor in the boy’s new bedroom, and at least get a bed in there, so the poor child has a place to sleep. As sore as I am from pulling up carpet, padding, staples, nails, scraping the subfloor, and laying the half I already have down, he may have to sleep in a chair the first night. But, he’ll be home, so it’s all good!!!

I pick up DS and DD Saturday. We are then heading to west coast Saturday night for a work trip that happens to be in our hometown. They will be exhausted after finals and sports tryouts of course- but should be a nice break for all!

zookeeper kids home on Friday for just two nights then off with their school team for spring training for the first half o break…it is such a tease to get them home for such a tiny window before they are out the door again- they will sleep the entire time while I do loads of laundry, but even having them asleep in the house is better than nothing!

Chimneykid is home!! We can’t afford a family vacation and tuition but one of her school friends is coming to visit here for a few days and then they have plans to go away for 2 nights with a few school friends on their way back to campus. She reports many fewer classmates are doing the traditional spring break type trip together this year than last year - don’t know if that is lack of finances or some other reason. She stayed home an entire 3 hours before she skipped out with the car to see her “townie” friends. 8-| On the plus side, no homework for the first vacation ever! Very satisfying to be able to offer up a stack of books to read for pleasure - it’s been awhile since she got to read just for fun.

What is the process for students under 15 flying? Do they fly as unaccompanied minors? Does the school have someone check them in?

@swimgyrl It depends on the school and airline. When our kids were under 15- they flew southwest and the school provided transportation to the airport. A whole bus of kids arrived together and they checked in on their own. They always had at least one other classmate on their flight by chance. We never used the airlines where you had to pay the unaccompanied minor fee. We did make sure we taught our kids how to navigate an airport.

@swimgyrl My 14 yr old flies Southwest and JetBlue exclusively to avoid the UM fee and process (of AA, Delta, United - until 16 yr old.)

Thank you!

Most airlines (except Southwest) fly individuals under 15 as unaccompanied minors unless they’re flying with someone older than 16. If flying as unaccompanied minor, the fee is $150 fee each way, and the minor needs to be checked in and out of the gate by an adult. School policies about assistance with checking in and out of gate likely vary by school. SPS has notified new parents that they are not able to provide this service. It’s best to either 1) fly Southwest or 2) fly with an older student if using other airline.

Not sure if this was already said upthread, but most airlines will not book a kid on the last flight of the day. They do not want a kid being stuck mid-trip. Sometimes this means your child will have to fly home the next morning vs the day school gets out.

This is a time when it is helpful to make sure that your child has some local contacts. Most BS have plenty of day students as well as “local boarders”. My son boards at his school, but we live less than an hour away. He has a friend who is international and over Christmas break missed his flight home and it was the last flight of the day. We immediately drove down to the airport to pick him up. He was easily able to get a flight the next day, but there was no way we were going to let him spend the night in the airport. I would expect that many other local families feel the same way and make sure that the international kiddos are safe.

@GoatMama JetBlue is another exception that does not mandate UM service.

@payn4ward You’re right. If my brain were as fast as my fingers, I’d have put an “etc.” after Southwest. Apparently VirginAmerica, Hawaiian, and Alaska also make the UM service optional for children older than age 12. Unfortunately, none of them fly out of our airport. For extreme planners, try to have your children born between September 1 and mid-November.

And apply only to boarding schools where your kid can fly non-stop to the closest airport. Fit is not as important as logistics.
