I disagree. Beer can be a huge turnoff if its your first time drinking. I’m super glad my first time drinking involved daiquiris.
The solution is to either a) mix your own drink or b) watch the drink being made. Never just take a drink someone makes for you (forgetting things like roofies, you also want to follow that because you always want to know how much you’re drinking).

OP- when mixing a drink (ie screwdriver as previously mentioned), that would mean 1-2 shots of vodka, and then fill the rest of the cup up with orange juice.

I agree with Maizeeagle86’s guide, however, there are several people who get drunk much sooner than 5. I know people who are drunk after 2. I also know people who don’t get drunk until past 10.
It’s all about tolerance/ body type (and yes, I do mean type, not weight - people who are more muscular tend to have a higher tolerance than people who aren’t but weigh the same).

For your first time drinking, I’d say stick to 4.

Not quite. In general:

1 beer = 1 shot (of a 40% liquor, ie most vodkas)
(A shot of everclear, for example, being 80% = 2 beers)

Mixed drinks you tend to make with shots. Calculate from that. (again, I second Maizeeagle86’s guide as a general way to look at it)

edit: SEA_tide beat me to it.
I’ll second his/her DO NOT DRIVE bit too. Even if you don’t think you’re impaired.

Well i hope your not going to be driving afterwords seriously.

just stick with beer.

Stay away from mixed drinks if you can help it.

Don’t drink more then a half pint of whiskey.

Don’t start switchin around from beer to mixed drinks to a couple shots of southern comfort to bacardi 151 to whatever cause yea aint even gonna remember what you were drinkin.

Just don’t drink a lot if this is really your first time.

Some people really hate beer. If you want to drink a mixed drink, that is fine. Just mix it yourself (and DO NOT ADD A LOT OF ALCOHOL, just a bit) or try to get shot glasses - really easy way to measure. Don’t drink a lot and don’t drink multiple drinks quickly. Drink slowly and wait a while between drinks. Try to just drink one kind of alcohol. Don’t do shots if it’s your first time if you can help it. Drink some water if you can. When you get home, chug a bunch of water, it will stave off a hangover. AND DO NOT DRIVE. GET A DD. SERIOUSLY.

Before before liquor –> never sicker
Liquor before beer –> in the clear

While you’re poisoning your body with ethanol and acting like a complete idiot (everyone does at least once) check out the people smoking weed who are really chill, running the pong table, and not stumbling or constantly going to the bathroom.

Watch your alcohol etiquette. People can be very protective of their drinks. BYOB means BYOB. Even if it’s not BYOB, and it’s a house party, a good idea is to bring a six-pack and donate it to the house or at least give the host a few dollars. If it’s a frat party with kegs and all, wait your turn in line.

At some point, PEOPLE WILL STEAL YOUR ALCOHOL. Protect it, watch it, carry it with you.

Everyone reacts differently to alcohol. Beware of angry drunks, belligerent drunks, and the like. You could be one of them! For a number of reasons, you may decide that you don’t like alcohol. Don’t be afraid to not drink.

Agreed with most everyone here. I’d say start out with beer. The first time I drank I was very careful and only had two budlights- and I went home with a pretty good buzz. Remember, not everyone reacts the same to alcohol. Start out smaller, decide how you feel about it, and start building up your tolerance. Know your limits! Drink with people you know and trust. You don’t have to drink a little, a lot, or at all. No one is going to be mad at you for not drinking. If they are, well, they’re probably trying to slip you something.

Thanks for all the tips. Whenever the first occasion pops up for me to drink for the first time, I think I’ll just stick to about 2 or 3 cans of beer over a few hours to see if I get buzzed from that or not.

Please be careful if someone offers you punch or a mixed drink and you don’t know what is in it. Mixing different types of alcohol can be a big issue especially it’s in a “punch”. I drank some at a party once and got SO SICK for 2 days. Never did that again.

If you are offered beer and you don’t like it…nurse it for a long while…water it down if need be. Or you can always say no and get a soda. Real friends won’t pressure you and you don’t need the other types as friends.
