first time FAFSA and CSS

I finished FAFSA and CSS profile.
I mailed copies of 1040 and W2s directly to few schools as requested through CSS.

I am not sure if I need to also mail copies of 1040 and W2 to FAFSA/US Department of education?!

Thank you in advance.

You don’t need to send copies of your tax stuff to the dept of Education. I’d ask each school if they have everything they need and go from there.

Do look carefully at the financial aid website for each school. Some colleges that use the CSS Profile ask you to mail the tax returns to a service called IDOC - basically a scanning service - rather than mailing hard copies to the college directly. You are never asked to mail info to FAFSA or the Dept. of Education, but some FAFSA schools have a verification process and may ask copies be sent to them directly.

The process is not uniform among schools - so you really have to check each one carefully.

Will I receive a letter from school in case additional documents are needed?
Or should we email each school and ask?

I was thinking waiting till he gets/if accepted and then see if additional documents are needed.

Keep copies of your FAFSA and CSS documents. You will want them next year when you have to go through this “brain damage” again. Just a tip.

As rockvillemom says, you really need to check the Finanical Aid pages of each school’s website to be sure that you have submitted all the information they require. Some have an online application for financial aid in addition to FAFSA. Some require FAFSA and the CSS Profile and sumittal of your 2010 Tax Return (including all forms) and your child’s 2010 Tax Return (including all forms) through the IDOC service. Others also want to see your 2009 tax returns.

Each school is different. DO NOT WAIT until he is accepted to see if additional documents are needed. It could jeopardize his chances of get the most consideration possible for financial aid.

Do NOT mail your tax returns etc to the U.S. Department of Education. They do NOT want them. If your colleges require them, it will be mentioned on the school website.

My son is not required to file tax return; he is a high- school senior with no income in 2010. We claimed him as dependent on our tax return.

IDOC was easy since they have a form to sign if not required to file.

What is your experience for other schools that are not part of IDOC?

As mentioned above…you need to check YOUR colleges. MY experience doesn’t matter a bit. First of all, policies change from year to year. AND the policies regarding supporting documents vary wildly from college to college. You need to check YOUR colleges…check the websites there for the required submissions AND for the deadlines. You might want to do this soon…over on the financial aid section of this site, there is a LOT of discussion regarding schools that had a Feb 15th deadline for receipt (not RECEIPT, not postmark) of tax returns and other supporting documentation. That date has come and gone. So check YOUR schools.
