First time FAFSA filers: Get your PIN! (and a warning)

@ilmom13579 - Yes. Each one can have a different financial situation (their own jobs, savings, etc) so each one needs to file their own. Your info will be on both and will obviously be the same on both, unless you file on different days. What you put in as savings, cash in checking account etc is “as of the day” you submit it. The first time, that is (if you come back to do the IRS electronic verification after you file you don’t change the savings etc amounts).

@dad0524 - according to kelsmom, who works in FA, only one parent needs a PIN.

@ohMomof2 - thank you for the response to what I assume will be the first of many questions in this thread.

Only one parent needs a PIN. Not both. But each student needs their own PIN.

Thanks for the answers all - off to submit PIN info for DC #2!

twogirls, you should have kept track of your pin somehow. Try the ‘request a duplicate pin’ at the pin site…

rhandco, it is possible for a parent to pretend to be the student, get a student and parent pin, sign and file fafsa without the student’s knowledge. That’s not in the spirit of the process. It’s like forging one of your kid’s checks IMO.

4kids…what about those of us and our kids who already have PINs…and use them for things like loan related issues. Do we have to change PINs…or can we just continue to use what we have?

^More info to come

I promise to post when the info is released for the new FSA ID system. At the recent FSA training I attended, we were told that the transition would be painless. The new system will use the SSN, which is already associated with the PIN, so it will most likely just be a matter of setting up a user name and password the next time the user logs into an account that would in the past have required the PIN.

Our DD will be filling out a FAFSA this year for the first time in a long time. She has used her PIN for Dorect loan related matters…but will need it for the FAFSA this year.

Hoping when she goes to complete the FAFSA, this actually IS seamless!

Thank you!

So, its been three days and I haven’t received the PINS yet…has anyone? I only have New Years Day off until next week sometime to get the financials together so I’m hoping to get it by then.

@NEPatsGirl‌ - I was wondering the same thing. I guess we’ll find out. Hopefully soon.

Ok, good, I was thinking I might have deleted them with all the sales/marketing emails…

(off to check my spam folder…I didn’t even think of these things)

I got the email today, I requested it on Friday.

You are given an opportunity to create your own PIN … I always suggest that option, as it is generally easier to remember if you create your own.

@NEPatsGirl‌ - I just got the email today.

As did I…good luck with the completion and good luck to your S or D in their college endeavors.
