I was happy with my scores until I saw my writing score--8 out of 12. I've never taken the writing section before and was just wondering if that's an okay score. I was really hoping for a little better (maybe like from a 9-11), and I kinda feel like ivy leagues aren't going to be too happy with my writing.

yeah with that strong composite your probably ok, how did you write your essay? I improved mine on the 2nd try doing the writing by focusing more on flow and structure rather than my words

I've never been a really strong writer, but I felt really confident with the prompt I was given. I maybe got a little bit cocky when writing my second paragraph, and I think that might've been my downfall.

While I want a better writing score, I'm tired of taking the ACT because of the science section (there's no way to study for that random graph-reading garbage) and the stress I get from waiting for scores.

are you supposed to address and refute a counter argument in the essay? i also got an 8 and kept it really basic, providing 3 good (what i thought were good) examples to prove my point. should i be devoting a paragraph to a rebuttal?

other than that im not sure what i should do to get that score up. i remember spending a lot of time on my intro and first body paragraph (they turned out pretty good) and then having to rush on the third body paragraph and conclusion (didnt get to read them over). so maybe its just an issue of time management.

but i guess an 8 isnt that bad overall? im not applying to ivies next year or anything, although some pretty good schools.

edit: btw this was my first act ever, cold as ice, no prep.
