wow you put a TON of stats...I cannot handle reading all of them but from what I can tell you are a really strong applicant. Whats your top choice?

I might have missed it, but where are you applying to?

umm im really indecisive :/ which i guess isnt good...but..i figure that if i got into georgetown or columbia...id definitely go...but if i got into USC or NYU itd be a toss up and id have to do some seriosu thinking! Bosotn im reeli unsure of..it depends...and santa clara was my moms suggestion cuz its close to my home :] and she doesnt want me goign far...but if i get in..IM onthe next plane to the east coast.. haha

thx for replying..im a basket case with this stuff

WOOPS! SORRY i forgot to mention my composite was a 32 on the ACT which is equivelant to a 1420 on the SAT...

If you like NYC, chances are you wont like Boston. I've grown up in both, and in my experience people identify with one or the other. I personally love NYC, and believe Boston sucks as a city.

ya..i visited boston and NYC 2 summers and LOVED both..i though boston was really pretty and beautiful...and has liek a "rustic" charm to it i guess...liek it has history and has pretty brick buildings and such...but NYC is the place to be!! its soo fast paced and busy...thanks for your input...its nice to hear from someone who's lived there rather than just visited!

You're in at SCU. Out of about ~125 applications from my school only 1-2 are rejected. I think you could probably do a lot better than that and you have a pretty good shot at all the others.

Hmm, tough to say, because I am not sure what the AA policy is for many of the schools you applied to.

That being said, your SAT is above average, but your GPA is going to turn many, many top schools off.

Being black, having athletic ability, and all of your ECs will help a bit. But the biggest concern with the adcoms will always be that GPA. They will logically conclude that with the amount of EC;s you have and working, that you do not have the time to focus on your studies.

The problem for you is, there are many students that have to work, and have the same type EC's, buuuut, their GPA did not suffer, or at least not to a 3.2.

My vote is this:

Columbia...Astronomical Reach
Gtown...Major Reach
NYU...Major Reach
Boston College...High Reach
Santa Clara...Reach (are you intending to apply to a Catholic School?)
USC...Slight Reach

Did you apply to any UCs?

I see no slam dunks simply because of the GPA and the SAT.

thx for ur input! i kinda figured a lot of them were reaches/moderate reaches ...but i figured that i might as well try cuz no one knows for sure what the admit process is...or exactly what type they're looking for...and who knows! why cancel myself out or forever wonder..haha

to answer ur question.... i applied to all the uc's except berkeley (i hate it), merced, santa cruz and riverside...which means i applied to davi, san diego, irvine, santa barbara, and ucla(which im REALLY not expecting anything from)....i also applied to cal poly SLO...

i just want any college to accept me! then ill get picky....:]

I think that you have a good shot at all the colleges that you are apply to. The only exception is Columbia. Columbia may be a reach, but I think that you should go for it anyway because you may get in.

I think you have a chance at virtually any school in the country with the possible exception of schools like Cal Tech, Cooper Union and places like the UCals(a system that I don't understand, so can't comment on).

One big consideration is: Can your parents afford to pay the costs of a school like NYU? You live in a state with excellent, affordable public universities. Are your parents willing to pay $20k->40 k a year for you to go out of state?

Sit down with them and talk dollars and sense. Even if you get need based aid, your parents are likely to have to pay much more for you to go out of state than they would for you to go in state. I am guessing that you also are solidly middle/upper middle class, so you aren't likely to qualify for virtually full aid for out of state unless you apply to and receive some major merit aid, which places like Wash U, Emory and Boston University have, particularly for URMs.

NYU is not known for being generous with aid. Columbia gives aid based on financial need. You have the stats to qualify for some nice merit aid out of state, but I am not sure you're applying to the colleges that offer those things.

I'll bet that finances, not admissions, will be what decides where you'll go.

you aren't ranked in the top half of your class

or am i not reading that right?

Thanks for your response...and you're right...I do belong to the upper middle class and although my family is fairly large (4 kids) and I have a sister in college, the cost of living in NYC is very high and my parents mentioned that they'd have no problem sending me if I got in IF i was offered financial aid...and if things go nicely (fingers crossed) and I do get in...that definitely is another factor to consider...

thanks again for your insight.

I am sorry, I meant to include..that if you have the cash, always apply! =D

You never know..something on your app may just work for you...always shoot for the stars...just don't get in over your head. =D

Good luck.

African-american females with 32 ACT scores are attractive candidates for any school in the country. Does your school rank? If those schools know that you are in the bottom half you might not get into the more selective ones however...Columbia has 100% from the top half, as does georgetown, NYU is 99% from the top half, BC is 98%.

ya..my rank isnt as stellar as id wish because of boo boos my freshman year and a lot of b's my junior year ( i overloaded myself with too much :[) however, the ranking isnt weighted....so im sure if they weighted id definitely be in the top 1/2...its not fair that ppl who are in remedial math and still in physical science their senior year and have an A in those classes are ranked higher than someone whos has taken harder classes and received B's :/ boo...but then again...thers liek 22 valedictorians at my shcool so im guessing that someone with a 3.8 is ranked one hundred something....

thanks for the information everyone!

Caligirl05, your list of schools is a little strange. I don't get a feel for what you are thinking. It's all over the place-NY, California, Catholic. You are a good candidate for many schools- I wish you had applied to some places with good reputations, where you could thrive, that might offer you some merit aid-some LACs, more Catholic schools, maybe Ohio Wesleyan. Many places are looking for good minority candidates- places that want more diversity. You have the activities, the leadership. But, don't worry, you will be accepted at a lot of your choices. Your list just sounds not very well thought out, to me at least.

sorry, but USC sucks. sorry, i was kidding. i'm just really mad at their football team right now.

anyways, your activities are all great and i think your school choice is really interesting. it's sort of sporadic like OneMom said, but hopefully things will work out for you.

I agree with One Mom. Georgetown and Columbia are head and shoulders over NYU and USC. I'm not a big fan of the latters. I think there are much better smaller schools. I do think you would have some great shots elsewhere, and your list is a little skimpy. Take a look at some of the schools where the deadline has not yet expired --see the threads on the admission search board. A high scoring African-American will be a catch many places, and might offset your horiffic rank. You EC's are very good and the work experience too. You should be able to do significantly better than SCU, but it might be to a place you haven't heard of. Like you could have a nice shot at Grinnell.
