First year Florida

Is First Year Florida really that bad? I haven't read anything good about it on the site. Would anyone recommend taking it or should I drop it? I hear it is way too time consuming for a 1 credit class. Any advice?

I don't know anyone who was glad they took it.

I didn't take it and I acclimated just fine.

Taking Warrington Welcome (a version of FYF) is needed to get into certain programs from what I heard, but other than that, stay away from it. I heard they give a lot of work and projects.

Here is an e-mail I received from the Dean of Students Office:

Welcome to the summer B term at the University of Florida.

As you may recall from Preview, SLS 1102 First-year Florida is a great one-credit course to help you make the most of your college experience as a Gator. In addition to actively engaging students in opportunities on campus, over 80% of the students who take SLS 1102 say that the course exposed them to resources and services they otherwise would not have found on their own in their first semester/year.

In summer B the course meets either once a week for two periods or twice a week for one period.

If you were unable to register to take SLS 1102 First-year Florida in the summer B, seats do become available so be sure to try to add the class beginning 8am on June 28 through the end of drop/add on July 1 (check out Office of the University Registrar for exact dates and times).

If you registered for SLS 1102 First-year Florida and have now changed your mind, be sure to drop that class (unless you are required to take the class) so that other students are able to take advantage of the course.

SLS 1102 First-year Florida is graded and like other classes at UF it is not an “easy A”…but it is a lot of fun and you will learn a lot about UF and yourself. SLS 1102 First-year Florida is the kind of class that you will get as much out of as you put in so be sure you have a genuine interest in being proactive about being a successful Gator. If this sounds like you and you are excited about being a Gator, be sure to register for SLS 1102 First-year Florida.

Thank you,
