Anyone who's considering taking First Year Florida should read this

The Dean of Students Office

The new common reading book has been announced.
It's required reading for anybody taking that class.

In case you are wondering, First Year Florida is a one-credit class that aims to get one acquainted with college life and the university, at least from what I've heard.

On First Year Florida-

I'd recommend taking the class. Sure, some might think its a lot of busy work and events you have to attend but at the same time, I know a lot of my friends who didnt take the class dont know as much about the school as I do.

Also, special sections of it are really helpful. For example, the Warrington Welcome section I think is great for Business students. The peer leaders (those who help teach the class) are almost always business majors and they can definetely help you get on the track you want to pursue.

any other questions or if you need elaboration, just ask/ pm me.

I wouldn't take the class. The things they tell you in it most students learn by themselves, and the class just becomes a pain after a while.

UF isn't really that intimidating guys! You just have to get used to it.

I am so flipping excited about that book.

I'm probably the only person who saw that and smiled.

I don't plan on taking FYF though. Blech.

what is "First Year Florida"?

First Year Florida is basically a "freshmen orientation" course.

Its capped at about 25 kids per class, all freshmen.
there are special sections sometimes, according to what you will study, or if youre a first generation student. (There pre-health, Warrington welcome (the business section) , etc).
Mostly, its all general sections.

Some people will tell you it was too much busy work for a 1 credit class. I don't think the work is that bad, its an easy A. You just have to write about 4 reflection papers, at 1 pg, double spaced each. Theyre just graded according to if youre grammar doesnt suck that bad and you answered the questions. They make you do activities such as interviewing a faculty member and finding out about the resources on campus. Its a pretty cool excuse to make an appointment with a professor or some campus resource. Oh, attendance is a big thing, you can usually miss only one class. But try to sign up for one that isnt too early, that way youll make it to class.

Also, you meet people in that class since you have to do group assignments sometimes.

The class is taught by a UF staff member and an undergraduate student. The undergraduate students are called "Peer Leaders" and theyre there to answer any questions you have, be a sort of mentor.

I think the class is pretty good, if you take it over the summer you meet for about 2 hrs (2 periods) ever week. Over fall or spring semester you meet once a week for 1 hr (1 period).

hope that helps.
