Hello so I am a rising freshman at high school. The classes I am currently enrolled in is Algebra 1, English 1, World History, and Honors Biology, physical education, etc. I was unfortunately able to only sign up for one honors class (Biology) since the other classes were full. I was wondering when it comes down to applying to colleges, will this be held against me? I will be taking these courses all year my freshman year. Thanks!
When school starts, go into your counselor’s office and say you’ve heard that colleges look to see that you’ve taken the “most rigorous” course load possible. Ask her what that means at your school. At my younger sister’s, it just means “has taken two or more APs or weighted honors classes”.
If your school has a similarly easy policy, you don’t need to worry. If it has a harder one, you can ask for advice on what to sign up for sophomore and junior year. As it is, that’s not a bad schedule but I only count 5 classes and don’t see a foreign language.
Thanks for the reply! Will do. I actually am taking a foreign language. Currently I am signed up for Spanish 1 and a few other electives unique to my school. However, as for foreign language, which language would you recommend? As of right now, I plan on a career in medicine.
The one that interests you most.
Do you mean other honors classes normally taken by 9th graders? If so, then its time to get your parents involved. Schools routinely ignore kids, sad to say, but they are less likely to brush off a parent that cares and makes it clear they want their kid to have the same opportunities other kids are getting. “Full” isn’t a law of nature, its a choice by the school administrators. They can put 1 more desk in the room if they wanted to.
