I am currently an eight grade student applying to honors classes for next year. I’m going to be applying for honors biology, honors geometry, honors french II, and honors world history. My high school does have honors English avaliable but I’m not academically eligible. I was wondering how this will effect my chances of getting into a selective school, although it is only one class. My school doesn’t have any AP classes in freshman year, so I am taking the most challenging classes other than english. So how will taking College prep English freshman year effect my college applications? Yes I know it’s early for me to be thinking about this but I want to be prepared. Thanks!
If the rest of your schedule is competitive, not taking one honors class will not hurt you too much. However, you should make sure to work with your English teacher to see what you need to work on in order to be eligible for honors and AP English your next few years.
Thanks!
Your plan for honor courses next year looks fine. What do you mean by not academically eligible? If it means your grade was too low this year, be sure you focus on your classes next year. You want to have a strong GPA throughout high school. I would say if taking too many honors courses would lead to a few C’s, you want to avoid that. And while higher level English courses will help with ACT/SAT testing, essays, etc., there are many good schools across the US that will accept hard-working students who have a good GPA without any AP courses in certain subjects…or for that matter any AP courses. Good luck to you!
Thanks!
My advice is to take honors classes in your stronger subjects and/or what you enjoy. My parents actually recommended that I take a regular class this year (as a freshman) because it’s my first year of high school. My teachers have told me that it’s better to have a good GPA than be in a class you might not do as well in, so I don’t think taking regular/college prep English should affect your chances. Plus you have 4 other honors classes (I only have 3, since honors history wasn’t an option), so your schedule should be rigorous enough for freshman year in my opinion!
Thanks!
