In the housing application it asks for your top 5 choices. My d is not interested in the residence colleges and so only listed 3 preferences. Can you be "forced" to go to a residence college? I assume not, but just wanted to check. Thanks!

As of 2 years ago, there were some students who were assigned to Hereford who did not request it.

So how would that work? Do they send you a note instructing you to fill out the application for the Residential College in question? Or do they just put you there?

I imagine you would not have to do an application, if you did not ask to be there.

charlie – was Hereford all part of the “residential college” at that time? Until recently, I don’t think all of the Hereford rooms were part of that. Now it appears they are.

Hereford has some interesting history – Up until 2008, there were 5 Hereford buildings. Then Housing tried to make Hereford first years only, which met resistance. The response was to redesignate 3 of the buildings as upperclass non-residential-college housing, and redesignate Gooch/Dillard (which was upperclass housing) to first year housing. They also tried to convert the Brown corner rooms into first year triples but they realized the bathroom situation would not be adequate I believe.

Are the bathrooms communal or are they attached to the rooms? And do people usually get to stay with the person who’s name (rather, computing ID) they wrote on the preference thing?

Both students must mutually designate the other on the housing application, but I’ve never seen rm requests not accommodated.

You will have hall baths in the McCormick and Alderman dorms. Gooch/Dillard are suites that each have a shared bath. All this can be found on the housing website, along with floor plans, and information about residential colleges.
