First year residence halls

I was accepted ED to Elon and will be joining the class of 2020. I went to rising phoniex weekend and took residence hall tours. I narrowed my choice down to global and danieley. I was leaning more towards danieley but upon reading it seems that it is mostly sophomores and further away from campus. I know that elon tries to keep the freshman in the center of campus so I was wondering how hard it would be to make friends if I lived in danieley. If anyone has any suggestions please help.

You should get your first choice since you were accepted ED. Congratulations, you have a great 4 years ahead of you!!

I would recommend Global over Danieley as a freshman… First and foremost that is an all freshman neighborhood so that’s where you will make the most friends, and also where your classmates will be, so it will be easier to do study groups etc. .Danieley is nice but it’s predominantly sophomores, who have found their groups of friends already, for the most part… That said, Elon is a friendly place and you will be able to make great friends wherever you live.

The location at Global is really convenient to Lakeside dining hall, sports venues, the library, and not terribly far from Historic neighborhood where you will have classes, and undoubtedly friends as well… I think you’ll connect better to Elon living there… Take the opportunity to live in the middle of things while you can. Also remember that you will most likely be living at Danieley as a sophomore so you’ll have the chance to experience that. You might get tired of it after 2 years. Plus, the dorms at Global are really, really nice. My daughter says that everyone she knows who has lived there loved it.

My daughter lived in Historic and loved it there too and would do it again. That’s close to classes and in a beautiful part of campus. I know you had ruled that out but in case other readers are wondering, that’s a great atmosphere too.

Just saw your comment on the other thread about sense of community at Global. I am a parent getting this through a student, so hopefully students will answer here as well because they would know better.

Global dorms are similar to hotel rooms. They have the heavier doors that shut automatically so you can’t just sit in your room with the door open and chat with people as they go by. But they do have common rooms which are really nice. My daughter said that some Global floors have a great sense of community and some don’t. It depends on the personalities of the students on that floor, which is a crapshoot.

Historic dorms are more conducive to that because doors can be, and often are, left open which invites more interaction. But again, some floors in historic are close and some aren’t so there are no guarantees.

I echo what superwoman said. My son is finishing up his freshman year in Historic. He loved it. it was very social and he has met tons of people. He will be living in Danieley next year. The great thing about Historic is that it is predominantly freshmen, so everyone is looking to meet friends.

Agree about Historic! My Freshman D was ED and picked that as her first choice; she LOVES it and has no regrets! Historic has a totally different feel that you won’t get anywhere else on campus, and being almost entirely freshman it is very social. She has an end room on the first floor and almost always has her door open so she can see people. She is very glad she didn’t choose Global. My older son also happily lived in Historic his freshman year. I would not advise Danieley as a first choice for freshman - agree with the suggestion that you live in the midst of things your first year.

My son was also accepted ED. We attended Fellowship Weekend and was chosen as an alternate. Fellows participate in many activities together- hence instant family of friends. We toured the dorms and my son chose Global, Colonnades, Historic, and Danieley Center- in that order. I agree with all the comments above. Each neighborhood has a different feel and different activities. Global has an international feel as the name suggests. Historic feels traditional, friendly, and peaceful. Colonnades I don't know but my son liked it. He completely hated Danieley Center as it is remote from center of campus and apartment like.
Also to consider are the LLC which all have different themes and activities- there are over 20 of them. Some do require an essay and are situated in specific neighborhoods.

We are visiting again for the second Rising Phoenix Weekend to see which he likes best- it is a tough decision.

Here is my 2 cents. My Son (currently a sophomore) lived in Global last year. It was new, clean (to start with anyway…LOL) right in the middle of everything, easy for him to get to classes, sporting events, the library & practice (on a sports team). They were able to keep the doors open in the room - maybe they jammed them or something. It was nice that he did not have to go down the hall to use the bathroom or shower and it was connected to his room. He made many friends and that led him to his Sophomore living decision.

This year he lived in Danley for the fall semester - it was a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath suite. He like it a lot but being the only member of a sports team it was difficult with the hours he kept and they kept. It was a nice place with kitchen area, no stove but a full fridge and a small living room. Since he is a business major most of his classes were right near him anyway so it wasn’t very far to walk

He moved to Crest in January and its very nice, 4 bedrooms with 4 baths. Living room and a full kitchen. While it’s more expensive it allowed him to go on the 300 meal plan which more than offset the cost. He is tied to the Bio bus though. Have to admit the place is very nice.

Next year he is moving to Mill Point as a junior. took a tour of it a couple of weeks a go - homerun is all i can say

My son was in Danieley M freshman year and LOVED it. He was in a 4 bedroom suite but the common room was converted to another bedroom due to over acceptance rates so there were 10 people in his suite. Two full baths, washer, dryer in their suite!, and kitchenette.

He was in Danieley A sophomore year and also loved it. That was a two room, to bath apartment for four people. Laundry facilities were downstairs in the building next door.

Basically all the dorms are nice so you really can’t go wrong.

@bkbmom- my daughter will be in Danieley N this year- was there any furniture in their common room last year (like a couch or table?). We’ve also heard mixed things about whether or not the room has a microwave and if there is a laundry room in the building or laundry in their suite- any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
