NutonaBike I posted the BA/BS question on CC a while back, just generally, not specific to Scripps, and the general concensus was that for grad schools and employers the two degrees were interchangeable. In an institution that offers both, I assume that the scientist would be expected to take the BS track but if an institution doesn't, than an undergrad isn't considered a light weight for going w/ the BA.

I know that doesn't really address your question totally or even maybe partially but it may be a reason why they feel it is OK to offer intensely rigorous science curricula even w/o a BS.

Thanks, historymom. I agree, a BA or BS are equally fine for pre-meds -- especially when one considers that there are some students (speaking nationally, not Scripps specific) that apply and are admitted to med school as juniors and who never get a baccalaureate degree of any sort.

I'm not critical of AISS -- I just find it an interesting quirk to have a highly technical BA. My first reaction was that if the student has the math and science bones to get into AISS then why not apply to Pomona or Mudd in the first place? But on further thought it does make sense as it reinforces Scripps' goal of being interdisciplinary. AISS adds more academic options for students to be creative with their curricula. It's a good thing.
