What exactly is the difference between Eng 124, Eng 125, and Comp Lit 122? I heard Eng 124 is literature-based. Which one would you recommend?

I remember someone telling me that 124 is similar to AP Lit, and 125 is similar to AP Lang. I took CompLit and it was fine, although by no means my favorite class. Didn’t like the GSI much. The good thing with CompLit is that there’s usually a description of what each section’s topic is, so you can pick one that interests you.

There’s also a History class you can take for your first year writing requirement, but I forget what number it is.

^ history195. thats what i’ll be taking :)

Thanks guys! Anyone know what the books are for each class? (is there somewhere I could buy second-hand books?) what’s the difference between CompLit and 124 then?

I think whichever you choose to take, most of the 124 and 125 courses are GSI taught (not familiar with comp lit 122). I strongly recommend rate my professors. That site sometimes has helpful info on gsi’s but I would say I used rate my professors before I took Eng125 and it paid off tremendously.

Definitely use rate my professors. Although there might not be many entries for GSIs. If you can’t find entries choose whatever fits into your schedule. Complit uses books from other languages/cultures, which is the only difference with the English classes. I took complit freshman year. It was alright.

I believe complit 122 is also taught by GSIs (mine was anyway).

i loved my eng 124 class… it was taught by a lecturer instead of a GSI and we read actual books. eng 125 reads anthologies and you don’t really read literature.

so basically if you want to read classic books take 124, if not take 125, or if you are interested in the topic of the complit/history take those

I’m really interested in 19th century american/russian lit, ok with 20th century lit, but I don’t like epic poetry. generally I prefer lit to history. What kind of literature do they teach in 124 and in CompLit? and for 125, is it pure history? could anyone give me an example of what you do in 125?

also, how big is a first-year writing class? …and…this may sound like a stupid question, but what’s a GSI?

A GSI is a grad student instructor, and none of the classes are over 20 people…

In my 124 class we read some Joyce, Freud, Wordsworth, Shelley, etc. All of them have different topics and you can read about it on the course guide. Also, it depends on your orientation date which class you will be able to take. I had a really late one, so they were all full. Don’t worry about taking it second semester either. You can do a search for other classes that you wouldn’t expect to fulfill the req but there are some odd ones…

My friends that took 125 read stories out of anthologies and wrote their own examples of them. They wrote a narrative and other types of genres. In 124 we wrote critical essays about the works.

Generally:

124 - reading books
125 - reading shorter excerpts
