What are your opinions on Fisher School of Business? I saw on the Poets & Quants rankings that it dropped something crazy like 40 points down to #87. Seems impossible that a school could actually change that much in one year so I’m not sure what is going on. Of course I realize Rankings are not perfect measurements. If anyone has any information or experience with the school I’d love to hear it. Thanks
I think its actually doing fairly well…there is some issue with the relationship of higher level staff at Fisher and they dont market themselves to p/q especially aggressively relative to Kelley etc…its actually gotten harder to get in there, professor i met with said they want to be at Michigan level in next years and they plan to ramp up selectivity over time.
Do not even pay attention to these clowns at Poets & Quants. These same clowns have Cal Berkeley at 83, GW at 86, Babson at 88, and Purdue at 89. All of these schools would rank in the top 30 no matter how you spin it. There is no way a school would fall from year to year to the levels they have posted them at. In addition, there is a bunch of data missing from these rankings for all of these specific schools. If you are going to rank schools, all the data should be consistent, otherwise, leave them out. Just look at some of the comments people have posted. These are the same guys constantly “advertising” and “promoting” certain schools.
Fisher is a great Business school and of the best when it comes to Public schools. I cant never imagine choosing Lipscomb, Christopher Newport, Evansville, Bowling Green over any of the schools mentioned above. Unless we are talking financials or fit. But purely Business to Business. NEVER!
My buddy who’s at fisher said they didn’t get enough responses from alumni regarding their “experience” there which put them at the bottom of that part of the ranking. There’s been a tif there for years between p and q and osu.
Anyway he says they could care less about the poet and quant ranking. He just accepted a job with Deloitte consulting.
Can anyone speak to the strength of Fisher’s Information Systems program? I’m kinda torn between attending IU for Kelley or OSU’s Fisher.
@SaucyCollege - I think pretty good - similar ranking as Kelley - I am very torn between both - I was all IU for a while but now leaning towards OSU - being in Columbus is big positive and seemingly better college experience overall.
The college experience will be very different due to the simple fact that both schools’ settings and cultures are very different. As far as academics, I would say that both of these large business schools are very comparable. It seems that Kelley is “slightly” regarded as the better Business School. Having said that, I would think the cost of attendance should play a role as a deciding factor. In addition, OSU as a whole is the stronger University and by far the more selective school when it comes to admissions. This is something to consider in case the student decides to change majors somewhere down the line.
@Boomer1964 Yes, that is kind of the reason behind the post. Fisher is ranked lower than Kelley, but Ohio is ranked higher than IU so it’s hard to know. Of course, it’s also hard to know how much faith to put into rankings at all.
Please do not give any weight to Poet and Quants rankings. What’s going on is that some schools, like OSU, don’t care about Poet and Quants so they don’t respond to the survey questions. Schools that don’t provide enough responses then get docked by Poet and Quants, resulting in low rankings. Any ranking that has UC Berkley as #83 should automatically be disqualified. The US News rankings are far from perfect, but they are better in that they’re based on the schools’ reputations according to Deans and Provosts. OSU Fisher is ranked 15 overall, with top 10 programs in accounting, finance, and supply chain logistics.
@watch37 - agree…Fisher is very solid program. Looking forward to admitted students day at some point in march.
Thanks for your answer. I figured there was something going on
IU Kelley, OSU Fisher, and Miami Farmer. Many students (and parents) have struggled with this decision. My wife and I took our son in the Fall of 2018 to visit OSU and Miami. Had a visit scheduled for Indiana Kelley and Purdue Krannert (another great option), but something came up and we were unable to visit the Indiana schools. Son just felt OSU was right for him from the outset, so it wouldn’t have mattered if we had made it to IU and Purdue for the tours. For him, he wanted a college that was in or close to an urban area so that he wouldn’t feel trapped to the campus for all 4 years. He also wanted a school with strong sports programs that would make it worthwhile to go to games. So those factors alone crossed Miami off his list. West Lafayette is kind of a dump from what we could find on the internet, so that nixed Purdue. So it came down to Kelley and Fisher. Although IU is a great school and I hear Bloomington is a bigger than average college town, OSU overall has a stronger academic reputation than IU, Columbus more to offer than Bloomington, OSU sports (‘nuff said), and OSU school spirit is second to none.
@watch37 - thanks for your feedback…we went to Purdue as well…didnt like it…we went to the OSU/Purdue game that night…probably didn’t help lol
Am really struggling between Fisher and Kelley and McCombs - no aid at UT, 15.5k OSU and 11k IU (so far).
While Kelley is a great business school the rest of IU is subpar compared to UT and OSU. If cost is a real concern (meaning debt incurred) then OSU is your better choice. If cost is not a concern, you are choosing between warm and cold climes as both are great schools with awesome school spirit.
U Texas McCombs is a great undergraduate business school, but if you’re not getting any scholarship/grants from them and assuming you don’t qualify for in-state tuition, I don’t see how UT is worth the extra tuition over OSU.
Yep…hate to start another Kelley vs. Fisher debate but welcome any input - I think really the choice is a function ultimately of fit…
@DG… You really have to visit both of these large business schools. They are both great but the overall feeling is completely DIFFERENT. There is no right or wrong. Based on the information you provided, OSU will run you about $10K less than Kelley even after factoring in the $11K Deans Scholarship from IU. You are already halfway there since your son/daughter has already been admitted along with a scholarship. Ask yourself these two questions. What if your the student were to switch majors, which University will provide a better education in a particular major? Lots of kids start out at Fisher or Kelley and they end up in Media Communications or something else. The second and MOST IMPORTANT question, where does the student see himself/herself? Is the student who is going to have the experience. Given some choices, the student should have the final say assuming, of course, everything checks out
@collegeisago - absolutely you’re right…one is a city, other college town…and you’re right there’s not a bad choice to be made here…thanks for your insight…
