I just started my second year at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I am currently studying advertising and marketing communications. But the thing is, I am just now realizing how bored and uninterested I am in most of my classes. I feel like I have little to almost no connection with the course material, other students, and just the school in general. Lately, I have been wondering if I made a huge mistake. I don’t get bad grades, but I am also not getting the best grades since I am quite tired of all the stupid receptive marketing material we go through in almost every course.
Ever since I can remember, I have always had a deep passion for film. I enjoy coming up with new ideas and eventually writing scenes for films that I will probably never make. I always thought this was a hobby and so did my parents. But now I am wondering if maybe I should transfer into the Film/TV production or Cinema Studies major at NYU’s Tisch. They are both super competitive to get into, so who knows if I even manage to be accepted.
However, I feel like I have no idea how to bring the subject up to my parents, who have never really liked the idea of me going into this (Film) field. NYU would also be a lot more expensive than FIT. FIT does offer a minor in Film and Media Studies… so maybe I should just do that.
As you can probably tell, I am very confused as to which path to take.
