Fix for FAFSA incompatible browser bug with Safari

The FAFSA is very dumb and there are many browsers Mac, Windows, and Unix that will run into the incompatible browser problem (just google).

I found a fix for those running Safari 5.1 on Mac:

Go to Safari / Preferences - Advanced. Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
From the menu bar select Develop / User Agent / Safari 5.0.6 - Mac.

A solution one may find to be easier, just use another browser. I’m using Firefox 10 on Windows and the FAFSA application works fine for me.

People with Macs- generally don’t run Windows ;)

Firefox is available for Macs too.

FIrefox isn’t working for me nor is Chrome

FAFSA site says Firefox 3.5 & 3.6 is supported- my version is 9.0
FAFSA says Chrome version 9.0 & 10.0 is supported- my version is 16.

I did get it to work by using the emulator of Safari 5.0
Now if I only had all my info!

tried using safari, firefox, chrome on my two month old MAC, everything up to date, except it seems the government isn’t. Going to try it on my ten year old MAC. Hope they fix it by the time I actually get my taxes in order.

Actually I have been filling out FAFSA for 12 years ( not consecutive) & there has ALWAYS been major problems with using a Mac.

This year was actually one of the easier ones.

( try using the Explorer emulator in Safari)

I am using Safari 5.1.2 on a MAC with no FAFSA issues

notakid’s fix got me in, thanks. Maya, i am using 5.1.2, iMac G 10.7.2, wonder what is different about your configuration. Last year I used firefox on an older Mac, but had the same problem with using browsers that were supposedly supported, but were not. Oh well.

I’m in the same situation with my Mac…but I don’t know what the emulator of Safari 5.0 means or is. Can someone help?! Thank you. My current Safari is 5.1.2

What version of Mac do you have? I have Lion 10.7.2.

From #1
Go to Safari / Preferences - Advanced. Select: Show Develop menu in menu bar
From the menu bar select Develop / User Agent / Safari 5.0.6 - Mac.

You can also try to emulate Explorer.

@ emeraldkity4: So I’ve tried what you suggested, but still run into the incapability issue.

Update:

@ emeraldkity4: The mac version didn’t work for me, but the internet explorer one worked. Thanks!

Thanks notakid – your tip worked!
