Does anyone know how flexible Stanford is in switching majors or departments? For example, if I apply saying I want to do Chem E, but then I realize I just hate it, can I switch to Aerospace E without a lot of trouble?

You don’t have to declare your major till the end of sophomore year.
And you can switch later as well.

That said, some majors have classes that must be taken in sequence, so you have to plan accordingly, if you want to make sure you graduate in 4 years.

As said, you don’t have to declare your major until the end of your sophomore year, though I know some who didn’t declare until the beginning of winter quarter junior year (by then, the registrar gets a little annoyed with you, though). Each major has a different declaring process, but you won’t be barred from a major. All you do is ‘add major’ on Axess and then do whatever else the department wants (like bring in your major adviser form, bring your academic profile folder from your pre-major adviser, etc.). You can drop a major like dropping a class–just go on Axess and drop it.

It’s very easy and flexible. :)

thanks for alleviating my worries =) now i’m not feeling the pressure every time I see the blank “Choose Major”
