When we select a major on our application, do we have to continue that major as a freshmen in college, or are we allowed to change it once we are accepted ?

Selecting a major on the application just tells Michigan what you’re interested in. You’re under no obligation to actually follow through with it. That is, you could choose Econ as a major on your application, and never take a single Econ class at Michigan. You don’t actually declare your major until the end of sophomore year (at the latest).

I am transferring and will have junior status when I start but obviously haven’t had the chance to declare my major yet. I was planning on meeting with a concentration adviser as soon as I get on campus anyway, but how does that work for me? I just so happen to have been able to get the prerequisites to declare, I think, but if another transfer student didn’t have equivalent courses offered at their college they couldn’t so at the earliest they couldn’t declare until Winter their junior year.

No the major you list on your application demonstrates your interest. You are not restricted in anyways to go into it. You can declare a major anytime before the end of the sophomore year (or else I think they won’t let you come back until you declare a major).

Yeah technically you have to declare by the end of sophomore year. However, if you decide to switch majors in the middle of your junior year, it’s not like they won’t let you.

If you want to go to Engineering don’t you have to transfer from LSA if you didn’t go in it in Freshmen year?

That is indeed the truth, Tentai
