Flights from Northeastern to back home?

Hey guys! So I'm heading to Northeastern this year as a freshman, and I was wondering if any senior members of this forum could give me advice on flights.

I've already booked my ticket back home for Christmas break. Because final exams times aren't settled yet and I wanted to be sure that I wouldn't miss any, I booked my flight on the 15th. But I just found out that I'm supposed to leave the dorm 24 hours after my last final exam or by 7 pm (I think) on the 13th. And changing flights is so expensive, so I was hoping I could get some much-needed advice.

Should I just stay at a hotel until my flight? Would Northeastern allow me to stay at the dorm? For future situations, should I really wait until the exam times are settled before buying a ticket?

Thanks!

Check with your RA right away when you move in - they have some leeway to let you stay a day or two extra.

And yes, wait until you have exam times before buying tickets.

A few weeks before the semester ends, the Housing Department sends out a form for you to complete. If you have a circumstance that doesn’t allow you to leave by the date that you are supposed to (i.e. the final exam time/24 hours stipulation) then you’ll have a chance to explain why and when you plan to leave. A couple of days extra at the dorm shouldn’t make a difference.

Past your freshman year, they don’t care when you come and go over Christmas/spring break (unless you’re moving out), since people have different co-op schedules and such. I think the reason with freshman and winter break is that they don’t want people who have finished finals to just go insane while others are still trying to study. I was able to get an extension on my move out this spring because of a personal/family issue that caused me to miss class and have work to make up.

I remember I had to get an extension sophomore year for something similar. Talk to your RA, they can probably make an exception. I always thought that rule was pretty weird.

I don’t think I ever waited until exam times were posted to buy tickets. They don’t post exam times for what seems like forever. I think I usually just guessed the last day. I only remember getting one exception though of the four semesters I lived on campus… maybe I just actually ended up having exams the last day the rest of the time? Not sure.
