Would using one of these suffice for prescreens? I don't know much about them.

They give good video but only so-so audio. It comes out very tinny. For the same price, I’d go with the Zoom series - better audio quality but slightly less video quality.

The zoom Q3 HD recorder is a really nice unit, it has great sound and the video is HD, and it isn’t that expensive. I have recorded a lot of recitals on it and such, it could probably do a fair job on a pre screening.

S has used the Zoom Q3HD for audition recordings and it worked great. We also use it for concerts and recitals and have been very pleased.

One note with the Q3 or any unit that used SD cards…buy the largest capacity card you can (I believe they now have 64gig and possible 128 these days)…recording at the highest level audio and video levels takes a lot of memory. If you have to sacrifice, record at 24 bit native audio and drop to non HD level video, but if you buy a large capacity SD card that shouldn’t be a problem.

Just bought one to use with iPhone. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can shoot HD video and produce great sound with the Mic plugged right into your apple device. Trying it out this weekend for prescreen practice. Just google Apogee Mic and youll find the product site.

Sounds intriguing. I will check it out!
