Florida Gators give $6 million to university

GAINESVILLE —- The slow economy the last two years has not deterred Florida athletics from providing some serious coin for the academic side.

The University Athletic Association, UF athletics' self-governed entity, is giving the university a $6 million donation for the second consecutive year, university spokesman Steve Orlando confirmed to the Sentinel.

Giving back to the university is nothing new for the UAA, which has dished out more than $50 million since 1990. But donations from the last two years more than double the previous per-year averages in an effort to help soften the blow of the economic climate.

Florida Gators, Jeremy Foley, Urban Meyer, academics, economy: Florida Gators give back $6 million to university - OrlandoSentinel.com

I don’t really understand how the economic slowdown has hurt the University. It’s not as if demand for education has decreased (which, I assume, is the problem for most businesses during a recession), and they’ve increased their tuition and fees.

A significant portion of the university’s operating budget is derived from state money. The state has significantly slashed their contribution during this recession.

Ah, I see. Well it’s nice to see that the athletic programs help out in times like this then.
