Florida prepaid...what happens if...

my son gets a full ride to a University? I bought a 4 year University plan with 2 years dorm as well as local fees plan. Can he accept the full ride and use the Florida prepaid for graduate school?

Yes. There are many options, including taking the money out, using it for a private Florida school, an OOS school. All have different amounts that you get, although none as good as using it for a Florida state school. Call them and ask.

@twoinanddone Thanks, I will call. If I understand correctly what you are saying…he can take the full ride either private or OOS but his best option for using the Florida prepaid would be to go to a Florida state school for his graduate degree to maximize? It was my understanding that he had to use the Florida prepaid within so many years after high school graduation.

He might not get grad school fully paid by the program unless he uses the fund within a certain number of years of graduating, but it doesn’t disappear. A friend’s son has 4 years of prepaid plus on of r&b. He got a full scholarship to an OOS school, so he didn’t use any of his prepaid and may use it for grad school. I know if he wanted to use it for his current school or a private in Florida, he’d get about $6000 for tuition right now, which is the value of tuition at a Florida public school right now. In a few years, that value might be $7000.

Depending on what that “full-ride” really means, there may be other expenses that can legitimately be paid through the Florida pre-paid plan. Also, if the student doesn’t finish in 4 years, the pre-paid plan might be useful for paying for an extra semester or two.
