I just moved toFlorida and am attending a public high school. I heard Florida schools were low and below average. I found out their rank and saw that their one of the worst in the country. Will this affect my chances of getting into top college?

Not true, exactly. The University of Florida is a fine research institution and very, very large. I believe it's one of the largest in the country. There should be many opportunities there. Florida State has its good points, especially if you want to be a circus performer (not kidding). F. Institute of Technology is fine for most engineering disciplines.

Basically, UF is one of the better schools in the South.

Oops. I just reread the thread. I assume you're talking about the public school you're attending and not Florida colleges.

Actually, your high school will rarely count against you. Just do well given the resources available.

man, i grew up in south fla, down by miamai, and our HSs arent that bad, i know alot of kids at good schools, emory, havard, darthmouth, nyu. wash U, UF and UCF both have 45,000+ kids and FSU has sick parties and UF is one the best public schools in the south and football and basketball champs

Yeah, I live in south florida and I attend a public school. There is nothing special about my school and kids get accepted into many universities throughout the nation. If your school is so "bad", just make sure you can graduate at the top of your class to show that you did well there. People from my school have attended:

Amherst
Berkeley
Brown
Cal Tech
Carnegie Mellon U
Columbia
Cornell
Darmouth
Duke
Emory
Georgetown
Harvard
John Hopkins
Northwestern
Princeton
Rice
UPenn
Swarthmore
Yale

The list goes on but I am just trying to mention the top schools. All I know is that all of these kids that went to these schools were exceptional. They were very involved in school and other activities. They graduated in at least the top 3 percent of their class and had good testing scores. I am applying to a few of those colleges as well. Unfortunately, I was deferred from Yale. I will hear from Rice in Feb...I hope I get in.

FSU does indeed have a student-led circus.

See: http://circus.fsu.edu/History.html

For the poster that recommended FSU for "circus performers", please educate yourself before you post. The FSU circus is an extracurricular student club. It is NOT a major. It's the same as joining a chess, skydiving, surfing, or rock climbing club. You can actually take an elective class, for one credit, that teaches you the fundamentals. Please, stop posting misleading information on this site.

Go figure. He lauds UF in one breath and dumps on FSU in the other.
