Florida State University, chance me?

I'm a white female. I recently applied early decision to FSU for Fall 2014. My GPA is mediocre (3.6 weighted) and my SAT score is 1720 with writing. I plan on retaking them because I know I can bring it up to at least 1800.

I really messed up my freshman year and had multiple Cs and a D (Spanish 2). Im retaking the course I had a D in and plan to finish by January with an A. My sophomore year I had multiple Cs too. I have a rising grade trend though. My junior year I had all As and Bs and my senior year I have all As. I'm in the AICE program and have received 12 college credits so far and plan to receive 9 more by the end of my senior year, along with earning the AICE diploma.

Extracurriculars: NEHS (founder and president), NHS, Sierra Environmental Club (Vice President), published reporter for my city's newspaper, I have been in a local opera chorus with a professional opera house for seven years, I played a lead role in a world premiere of an opera, I'm Editor-in-Chief of my school's newspaper, I was in Varsity Weightlifting, and have over 200 volunteer hours.

I plan on majoring in English and am taking two AICE English courses this year (A Level AICE English Lang 2 and AS Level AICE English Lit). The FSU counselor says that a good course load is the number one thing FSU looks for and used taking two english courses as an example of an ideal candidate's course load.

Please chance me for FSU! This is the only school I truly want to go to.

The D could absolutely wreck your application. In recent years that’s resulted in people getting outright rejected (assuming what they posted here was accurate).

That said, if you retake the course, and you have the course rigor (it looks like you do), I think that you will be fine.

Keep in mind though, if you applied for the December decision date, you’ll have to have completed that Spanish class in time for it to be reflected on your transcripts and sent to FSU in time for them to factor the new grade in. Finishing the class in January won’t help your current situation; they could outright reject you come December.

I doubt a D in Spanish, during a freshman year, is going to derail her admissions. As long as you retake it, and get a decent grade, you’ll be fine.
