Florida State University vs The University of Alabama

Hi guys!
So, I was accepted to the University of Alabama and I am planning on majoring in Psychology(on the pre-med track.) Once I visited FSU I was dead set on attending there, but after visiting the University of Alabama I am a little unsure because the campus and Tuscaloosa in general was so nice and clean compared to Tallahassee. Can someone please compare these schools for me in any way possible? Any input will be helpful! Thank you.

You might want to post this in the University of Alabama page also. What state are you a resident at? Are your GPA and ACT/SAT scores high enough to get you a significant merit scholarship at UA? Do you like SEC or ACC football? I’m biased as my son goes to UA. YMMV.

Both Schools are ranked about the same (UA is ranked 38th amount public universities, while FSU is ranked 43 in the latest US News ranking). Though FSU has a larger Psychology department, it really comes down to your personal preference and cost.

Unless you qualify for a 2/3’s Tuition or better scholarship (UA Scholar, which requires a 1330–1390 SAT score ;critical reading and math scores only), you may find it doesn’t make financial sense. It’s $6,500 a year at FSU, while it’s $24,000 (OOS Tuition) at UA (and don’t forget to include Bright Futures…)

http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html

IF you do qualify for one of the better scholarships at UA, you also likely qualify for the honor’s program.

Both schools will prepare you for med school, though it may be a bit easier finding EC’s at FSU (FSU does more research/has a medical school on campus…).

Good Luck!

I have to ask the same question that was asked above: what state would you receive in-state tuition in?

Whoops, I forgot to mention that. I am a Florida resident!

Unless Alabama gave you a scholarship, it is not worth paying twice the tuition to go to Alabama.

Alabama is extremely easy to get into relative to FSU. I know several people who have gotten in bama with 2.7 gpas, If you get into FSU you should probably go there it will be a better fit because you will be with people who were high achievers in high school and are motivated. Now I’m not saying there are not smart people at Alabama or people who had good GPA’s or anything but FSU = 10x cheaper because your instate so take advantage of it!

^^ That’s true if OP does not qualify for any of UA’s merit scholarships. However, if OP does qualify for the UA full tuition scholarships, then OP will most probably qualify for the Honors College and can get the honors classes as well as the honors dorms. Bama gets thousands of high achieving OOS students every year due to its scholarship offers.

This, especially if your ultimate plan is med school. You would be best served to limit costs in undergrad and limit any loans you get in undergrad.
