Flu & Finals

I, being the very lucky person that I am, caught the flu right before finals. On Thursday I have 2 finals. One is a presentation not an exam but it will be graded as such and an actual exam. I’m pretty positive that I won’t be well enough on Thursday to do either final. This is my first semester, first year at community college so I apologize if this is sort of a dumb question, I’m a noob. What am I supposed to do?

The only thing I can tell you is to talk to your professor ASAP. I’m not really sure what professors normally do when students are too sick to take their finals because every professor is different.

You might need a medication certificate if worst comes to worst. So you could justify your absence

Sometimes you have to take 2 ibuprofen, push through, and do the best that you can. It is called a final for a reason.

You’re probably going to need some documentation from a physician.

But then you also have to ask if you want to deal with all the hurdles that might come with doing this (e.g. you might not get to take the final until after winter break). One year I went to a final with a box of tissues and a garbage bag to put the used ones in and took my ibuprofen, cough medicine, and decongestant during the exam and just toughed it out.

I once got pneumonia right before finals. Go to the Dr asap and see if you can get Tamiflu to help reduce the length of flu and a note that you have the flu. Then figure out which finals you think you can take (maybe for some easier classes, or at least less finals to take). For the others, if you think you can’t take them, then ask about an incomplete. I had been attending and doing well in classes up until then, so I got 2 incompletes for the class and took the finals when I got back from winter break. At that point the Incompletes were changed to grades.

If the OP legitimately has the flu, and not the upper respiratory infection or stomach bug that people call “the flu,” then there is no way to just “push through.” The flu knocks you on your arse and you don’t want to be spreading that around.

Go to the doctor, NOW, and figure out what you have. Figure out if there’s a way to at least treat the symptoms. You might have to push through if it’s not the flu or some other serious issue. If it’s serious, contact your professors ASAP and figure out if there’s a way you can delay. They may say “no” and you have to be prepared for that.

THIS IS WHAT “INCOMPLETES” are for. Talk to your professor about them. For example, from our CC:

Incomplete

An Incomplete (INC) may be assigned at the discretion of the course faculty for students who have extraordinary circumstances of documented hardship or emergency. These are students who have been actively participating throughout the term and have completed a significant portion of the course in a satisfactory manner but approach the end of the term without completing all assignments. The following process should be followed:

The student contacts the faculty member with the appropriate documentation.
The incomplete contract is completed by the faculty member and must be signed by both the faculty member and the student.
Students will be notified by email to check their grades and to speak to their counselor about the impact of the incomplete.
All course work should be completed by the twenty-first (21st) day after the end of the current semester or term, exclusive of official College closings.
When a student completes the work satisfactorily, the faculty member will submit a change of grade.
If work is not completed satisfactorily, the Registrar will change the INC to an F. Students will be notified by e-mail.
For the purpose of calculating academic standing, the INC will be treated as an F.

And once this is over – get your flu shot next year. My youngest is quite susceptible to influenza, now we all get shots. It isn’t 100% effective, but we haven’t had it any year we have been vaccinated. Hope you feel better and find a way to get through your finals.

If they so no…won’t the OP have to just “push through” having the flu or take a 0 on the exam?

If they say “no,” and the OP actually has a documented illness that shows they are medically not able to take the exam, then it’s time to move up the ladder. But the time to do that is yesterday, not when the final is in ~12 hours.
