Hey guys, I’m a high school senior and I’m just dropping in because I’m kinda confused about Letters of recomendation… Can my letters of rec be from teachers who teach subjects unrelated to my desired major?

For example, if I wanted to major in biology, but had letters of rec from an AP US history teacher and an AP environmental science teacher, would that hurt my chances for acceptance?

Does it even matter as long as you have letters of rec?

Thank you so much!

Why is this on the Brown thread? You’ll find a lot more traffic, and hence a lot more answers from the College Search and Selection section. Even better, do a search on the entire board for Letters of Rec

Yes, your recommendations can come from teachers other than what you want to major in. In fact, it is best to have a recs from 2 totally different subject areas: like math and foreign language, history and biology.

@Chsowlflax17: I posted this in the Brown thread because I’m interested in applying to Brown, and I just wanted to see how others who may be interested/are attending Brown went about choosing their letters of rec–And yes, I will place this in the “College Essays” section

Thanks Fireandrain!!

@OP: Ah, ok. Makes sense, I guess. Sorry, may be my own personal preferences, and other people have different ones about where to post and such, but I like threads started in the Brown section to have some sort of Brown-specific content. And I probably would have answered the question had it just asked about Brown’s letters of recs specifically. Though since they do the same as pretty much everyone else, I’m probably just being nitpicky.

Oh, I didn’t realize it’d be best to have recommendations from completely different subjects. To answer your question, NervousStudentt, I was intending on asking my history and my English teacher because they’re both sponsors for extracurriculars I’m involved in. (But now, I might think about asking teachers in more distinct subjects.)

History and English are OK if those will be your strongest recs.

Oh okay, thanks for the advice fireandrain! :D
