Flute auditions

I've been working on music since last year, but I just got a few packets in the mail about audition pieces necessary for a few schools, and one of them is suggesting three separate pieces, one from each the French Romantic, Classical, and Baroque periods. I already have "Concertino" by Chaminade and "Sonata VI in Bm" by Handel, do you have any ideas/favorites for my last piece?

Isn't a Mozart Concerto - D or G (or movement from one) - standard fare for flute auditions? That would be Classical.

Always best to ask your teacher though!!!

Another suggestion: if you're specific audition requirements don't specify, take a look through some of the requirements for top programs like Oberlin, MSM, Manhattan, Juilliard, Indiana/Jacobs, NEC, Eastman. You should get a feel for the ranges, pieces and periods from what each of those specify.

Sorry, I can't be more specific. I'm not versed in the flute repetoire.

I think that if you were to go into an audition asking for a Classical era piece and you DIDN'T go in with a Mozart concerto, they would think you're off your rocker.

But, that's just my $.02

I agree with fluteWA!! Mozart in G is a good choice, make sure you have the cadenza prepared, you might be asked to play it. If you have any other questions about flute auditions feel free to PM me, I just went through the process last year! =)

Haha, I'm guessing that I need a Mozart concerto, then. Sounds like a plan.

Mozart is a must it seems. D also has Bach Sonatas, Debussy, Chaminade (Concertino), Handel and many, many e-tudes and excerpts.

Musicgirl524....care to share your journey with us???? :D There are not too many flutes who can mentor us!!

I'm happy to share my personal experiences! I currently attend the Boyer College of Music @ Temple University in Philadelphia. I absolutely love it! The flute faculty are amazing, all play or have played in the Philadelphia Orchestra and are graduates from schools such as Boyer and Curtis. As far as my journey as to how I got there, it was a very long, but intereting one!! I started studying privately when I was about 8 or 9 at the end of fourth grade. I stayed with the same teacher until sophomore year of high school (I was blessed to have two very wonderful teachers, my second teacher was actually my first private teacher's professor from college). I auditioned at 6 schools: Eastman, Northwestern, Boyer, Ithaca, Rutgers NB, and Shenandoah Conservatory. All great schools and I'd be happy to give you more info about any of them. I'm happy to answer any specific questions if anyone has them?
