Focus

Today, I received an invite to the diversity weekend for admitted students at Vassar. Who plans on attending? Should I go to this or to the Open House, or are these two things somehow connected?

I'm attending one of the Open Houses... since I'm not a minority student I didn't get a diversity weekend invite (I'm guessing that's why I didn't get one... makes sense). I'd say if you want to get a bit more of a perspective of what the entire accepted student body looks like in make-up you might want to attend the Open House. However, if diversity is something you consider of great importance in a college, it might make more sense to attend the diversity weekend which more-likely-than-not focuses a bit more on diversity at Vassar than the more general Open House.

yeah, I also got the Focus invitation. I don't think there's a separate open house...but by going to the minority one we can stay overnight 2 days compared to only 1.

Hmmm... two nights at Vassar sounds pretty nice.

From what I've heard (I'm not a minority student), the FOCUS weekend coincides with the Open House on the 22nd, because a hispanic friend of mine told me that she would be able to go to both on the same trip.

Open Houses are on April 17 and Apr 22. FOCUS weekend is Apr 21-23 so I believe you can attend both. My friends who attended FOCUS last year said it was a lot of fun, so i'd encourage you to come if you can make it that weekend.

Awesome! Thanks y'all for the responses. I think I'll go.

My daughter was also invited to the Focus Weekend. Expected registration time for it is Saturday, 4/21 from 2-6. The student spends that night with Vassar students. On Sunday, the Open House is for parents and students. It's an all day event and part of Focus. That evening, the student also stays with the Vassar student and attends classes on Monday morning. The activities end on Monday around 1 PM, I believe.

I really want to go!

Hey - I registered online for Focus, and also saw a link to overnight hosting. So I'm actually going to stay the 21-23, and then also stay Monday night and go to class again on Tuesday! Anyone else want to join me? You have to register for overnight hosting at least 10 days in advance (so like...before Friday). You also have to register separately for the two programs (while you're there) and bring two copies of the medical forms, etc, and you'll get hosted by two different people. I just wanted to see as much of the campus and classes as possible.

Also, question - is anyone getting travel grants to go to Focus?

Also, another question. Amherst's visit weekend is on the same days. Is anyone going to visit both schools? I really wanted to work it out, maybe attend Amherst's for one night and then fly to Vassar for one night...but Amherst has a strict travel funding policy (to get funding, you have to be there the whole time) and I have a conflict Saturday night (I'll get to Vassar Sunday morning, I hope - another reason I wanted to stay longer). Just wonderin'

I will be attending the accepted students program on the 22nd too! I'm not part of Focus, but will be spending the night in the dorm on 23rd. Hoping to get into some classes too. Hope we can all connect!
