Foggy Bottom vs. Mt. Vernon

We're just starting to look at GW. Can someone explain to me why the two campuses? I see there is a shuttle that runs between them. Do a lot of students need to go back and forth between the campuses? Would you be likely to have a class at one campus and then have to travel to the other campus for the next class?

Mt. Vernon campus is very pretty. It is a great place to take classes. The library there is extemely nice, as well as the small classrooms and faculty there. The dorms for the most part are also very new and spacious. With that being said, I would not recommend living there. There are plenty of people who live there and love it, but I would say a large amount of people would prefer to be on Foggy Bottom because it is integrated with the city. Also, while the shuttle ride is only 10 minutes, rush hour traffic can make you late for class on Foggy on a regular basis. It's simply inconvenient to have to take a shuttle for basically all needs. You have a dining hall, but once that is closed at 7 or so, there's no where really in walking distance nearby (unless you have 2 hours to spare to walk around). It's an amazing area, but without a car it's just a pain to live there. Just my two cents.

The deal with Mt. Vernon is that it used to be a womens college...i forget the name...but GW bought the property in '98 and made it the Mt. Vernon campus of GW. Thats why its a 10 minute shuttle ride from the foggy bottom campus.

Thanks...
Are most classes held at Foggy Bottom then?

yes, most classes are held at foggy bottom.

I think it used to be called Mount Vernon college and that is why it is called the Mount Vernon campus?
When we did the tour they told us most freshman core classes are offered on both campuses and the class sizes are smaller at Mount Vernon.

I lived on the MVC freshman year. As a freshman, I would recommend living on MV. The room upgrade makes the many shortcomings worth it.

Pros...

Rooms are much nicer than the freshman options on FB, and even some sophomore options. MV rooms are clean and quiet, while freshman rooms on FB are filthy and noisy.

Safety. On MV you could literally leave your laptop in the middle of the hallway for an entire day, and it would not be stolen. On FB, it would probably be gone in two minutes. There is not really any crime on MV.

The library is nicer and less crowded.

There will supposedly be a shuttle this year connecting MV to American University, where there is a Whole Foods, Best Buy, and other shopping options.

You can take all your classes on MV if you wish, making it a one minute walk to class much of the time.

Cons...

Only about 20% of the dining options available to FB residents will deliver to MV. I eat late, so I often found myself having to decide between pizza or cheesesteak four times a week.

Ames Dining Hall on MV closes at 7:30 PM, and the food makes my high school cafeteria seem like a gourmet restaurant.

The mail room is often incompetent, and twice I had packages full of cash go "missing".

The shuttle service is completely incompetent. They often wait for the entire bus to fill up, costing students 5-10 minutes, even when there are five other buses already there waiting. Drivers take extended breaks, costing you another five minutes. In the morning, it will take you 15-35 minutes to get to FB. Rush hour will take 45 minutes. Double those numbers if it is raining or snowing. If you have a lot of classes on FB, you may spend two hours a day on the bus.

If you want to go to a party, you usually have to go to FB.

how often do the shuttles run between Mount Vernon and Foggy Bottom and how late do they run?
